Excessive fatigue, lack of appetite? This is a signal that can tell you about ketones in your urine. This is a disturbing symptom that could be a symptom of, for example, diabetes mellitus. Is it also a legal afterburner? How do ketone compounds work?

Ketones – origin

Ketones are chemicals that are formed when you digest fats. Their permissible amount in urine is 0,2 mmol / l. When the threshold is exceeded, it is referred to as ketonuria.

Ketone bodies are formed in the liver when fat compounds are burned. They are used by the body as an energy source. The main “propellant” of humans is glucose, therefore the permissible norm of ketones is small. The production process of the substance is controlled by hormones (glucagon, growth hormone) and insulin.

With the proper functioning of the body, fats are digested and a small part is converted into ketone compounds. The situation changes with low insulin levels. The body has nothing to generate energy from and then uses spare fats.

Ketones – causes of the increased amount

Type 1 diabetes is the most common cause of increased amounts of ketones in the urine. The body needs an energy source, and because insulin levels are too low, it takes advantage of other alternatives. If all carbohydrates are not digested, ketone bodies are formed. They are first in the blood and later excreted in the urine.

At Medonet Market, you will find the MultiSure GK Ketone Tester, which detects the blood ketone bodies so that steps can be taken quickly to reduce the amount in the body.

The other reasons mentioned are:

  1. alcoholism,
  2. anorexia, bulimia,
  3. starvation diet,
  4. a diet with too little carbohydrate,
  5. overactive thyroid gland
  6. extreme physical effort,
  7. diabetes.

Ketones – symptoms of excess

  1. excessive fatigue,
  2. lack of appetite
  3. change in body odors (sweat, breath),
  4. somnolence,
  5. zatwardzenie,
  6. nausea, vomiting.

Excess ketones – treatment

Treatment for ketonuria begins with finding the cause. When it is diabetes, the main thing is sugar control. It is also essential equalization of water-electrolyte and acid-base balance. Another way of treatment is to choose an appropriate, individual diet (high in fat and low in carbohydrates).

Ketones in a woman and a child

Pregnant women are at risk of spreading ketones in the blood, especially when they experience prolonged vomiting and morning sickness. Elevated levels of ketones can be a symptom of gestational diabetes. However, be sure to eat dinner the day before the test. The lack of it can show ketones in the urine.

In children, even a few hours’ break from eating may increase the production of ketones. Other reasons for the increase in ketone compounds in children may be: diarrhea, vomiting, fever.

Ketone compounds as legal doping

Ketones are considered a legal legal highbecause they increase energy levels. It is extremely important in the case of a lot of physical exertion. Athlete tests do not include ketone testing because it is a self-produced substance in the body – and legal at the same time.

To check the effectiveness of the method, tests were carried out on cyclists. Athletes who were given a drink containing ketone compounds have been shown to travel a much longer distance than cyclists who drink a drink containing glucose. The prerequisite for the study was low blood glucose levels.
