An Oscar-winning face of Lancôme, she sees herself as an ordinary person with an extraordinary job. The 37-year-old actress talks about what helps her to remain herself in any circumstances.
Psychologies: Seven years ago you became Lancôme’s beauty ambassador. How has it changed your life?
Kate Winslet: Is it already seven? For me, this is an invaluable experience: I learned a lot about makeup and personal care. Friends even ask for advice, considering me an expert in matters of beauty, such as which eyeliner or cream to choose. I am happy to answer such questions — after all, not so long ago I asked them myself.
The face of a cosmetic brand — what do you like most about this role?
K.W.: Working with people I have the utmost respect for. For example, with such photography gurus as Steven Meisel, Peter Lindbergh, Mario Testino. They manage to capture and capture the essence of a woman in their pictures. In addition, it is nice to be part of a team that works to ensure that women can enhance and maintain their natural beauty. I am not a supporter of radical rejuvenation methods: they change the appearance too much. And cosmetics act carefully and allow us to appreciate the changes that occur to our face over time.
Getting older — what does that mean to you?
K.W.: Gain self-confidence. I remember, at the age of 20, I looked with admiration at older actresses and thought that I could never look so wonderful. If someone had told me then that at 37, with two children and an eternal lack of time, I would be a role model, I would not have believed it. As I get older, I worry less about how I look and what others think of me. And now I am more satisfied with myself than ever.
What do you think makes a woman beautiful?
K.W.: Inner strength. The ability to love selflessly. And good complexion. A woman is beautiful if she does not put on tons of makeup and feels comfortable both in everyday life and in solemn moments.
Being feminine — how do you understand it?
K.W.: Be elegant. Such a woman exudes confidence and does not stand in front of the mirror for hours. Less is always better. Following this principle, I spend a minimum of time on daily beauty rituals and even make up myself for ceremonial exits. Foundation, mascara and bright lips — that’s my evening makeup. As a girl, I loved to play with my mother’s red lipstick, and this color is still my favorite. Scarlet lips can make a look both sexy and sophisticated depending on how you dress.
How would you define your style?
K.W.: For going out, simple and — I hope — sophisticated. And for every day — functional. I have many scarves and boots.
