The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are ready to leave their humble abode in Wells. Especially for the future monarchs in west London, Kensington Palace is being put in order, namely, apartments 8 and 9, famous for the fact that once their mistress was the mother of Prince William – Princess Diana.

No matter how hard the newly-made wife of Prince William tried to lead the lifestyle of a modest housewife, the position obliges: the young couple was recommended to move to London, closer to their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who in 2012 will celebrate the 60th anniversary of her reign.

Kensington Palace is the main entrance to the royal residence and museum.

For their London home, William and Catherine were asked to choose one of the royal residences, including Buckingham Palace. However, they chose to stay at the deliberately modest Kensington Palace, where William’s mother, Princess Diana, lived.

Happy together: Princess Diana and sons William and Harry in the apartments of Kensington Palace.

Such a decision may surprise few people: William is strongly attached to his mother and to everything connected with her name. His idea was to give Catherine Diana’s engagement ring. So, the desire to move to the house where he spent the best years of his childhood with Diana and his younger brother Harry is quite natural.

The gates of Kensington Palace become a memorial for Princess Diana on August 31st.

Despite the fact that several royal families live in Kensington Court at once, it is best known to the world as the London residence of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Diana lived in it after her divorce from Charles. The coffin with the body of the princess who died in a car accident was carried out of it.

Since then, fresh flowers have not been translated at the gates of Kensington Palace at any time of the year. And annually on August 31, the territory of the palace turns into a sea of flowers in memory of Princess Diana.

William and Kate Middleton won’t be the only residents of Kensington Palace. And, perhaps, one of the most modest. A separate wing called “apartment number 1” is occupied by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. Next to them in “apartment 1A” is Princess Margaret – she also has a separate wing. The part of the palace, called “apartment number 10”, is the official residence of the Duke and Duchess of Kent.

Where will Will and Kate live?

Nottingham Cottage is marked with 10 on the map.

However, it is not yet known for sure whether William and Kate will live in the palace itself, in the apartments of William’s mother, or they will choose the Nottingham cottage, which is detached on the territory of Kensington Palace, which seems to many to be a better choice for a young couple. After all, Princess Diana herself called “apartments 8 and 9” not a house, but a “royal cage”, and was not happy living in them.

The famous gardens of Kensington Palace were the favorite walking places of Princess Diana and her sons.

Kensington Palace is famous not only for its buildings, but also for the unique gardens in which William loved to walk and play with his brother Harry, accompanied by his mother.

Now the park around the residence is accessible for excursions, as well as part of the palace chambers, where interesting exhibitions on historical and even fabulous themes are regularly held.
