Calipoz prolongatum is a prescription medicine used to treat potassium deficiency. It is available in the form of long-acting tablets. Kalipoz Prolongatum is used by, among others patients with cardiovascular diseases, cirrhosis of the liver with ascites and secondary aldosteronism. Kalipoz – action

Kalipoz prolongatum is a drug whose action is related to the presence of the active substance. 1 tablet contains 750 mg of potassium chloride, thus providing 391 mg of potassium ions. The preparation works by providing the potassium necessary for the proper functioning of the body.

Potassium is one of the main electrolytes found in cells. It is responsible for maintaining the electrical voltage in cell membranes and the transmission of electrical impulses between cells. Moreover, it participates in the processes of synthesis, e.g. protein synthesis in ribosomes and cycles in which the body’s cells produce energy and plays an important role in the transformation of carbohydrates.

Kalipoz – destiny

Kalipoz prolongatum is a drug that is used in the case of potassium deficiency caused, among others, by:

  1. taking diuretics, cardiac glycosides;
  2. chronic diarrhea and vomiting;
  3. certain kidney problems.

In addition, the drug can be administered to people suffering from diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cirrhosis of the liver with ascites, and secondary aldosteronism.

Kalipoz – dosage

The dosage of Kalipoz prolongatum is determined by your doctor, therefore you should follow his recommendations.

Exemplary dosage depending on the cause of the potassium deficiency:

  1. slight hypokalemia – 1-2 tablets a day
  2. significant hypokalemia – 2-6 tablets per day.

When determining the optimal dose, other sources of potassium, e.g. from food, should be considered.

Kalipoz – contraindications to use

The Kalipoz prolongatum leaflet informs about contraindications to use. The drug should not be taken, inter alia, in case of:

  1. hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or any other ingredient;
  2. hyperkalemia;
  3. simultaneous intake of potassium-sparing diuretics;
  4. congenital paramiotonia;
  5. conditions involving extensive cell destruction, e.g., severe burns;
  6. gastrointestinal bleeding;
  7. metabolic disorders;
  8. severe dehydration.

Kalipoz – warnings

Warnings when taking Kalipoz prolongatum:

  1. serum potassium levels should be monitored before and during treatment;
  2. special care should be taken in patients with impaired renal function;
  3. potassium chloride used alone or in combination therapy can sometimes cause gastrointestinal ulceration;
  4. special care should be taken in patients with heart disease, impaired liver function;
  5. the product should not be used in patients with lactose intolerance, galactose or glucose-galactose absorption syndrome;
  6. the drug may cause allergic reactions due to the content of cochineal red.

Kalipoz – drug interactions

Kalipoz prolongatum may increase blood potassium levels when used together with:

  1. diuretics
  2. angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
  3. cardiac glycosides
  4. cyclosporins
  5. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  6. heparyny
  7. beta blockers
  8. other potassium-containing medicines.

Kalipoz – side effects

Kalipoz prolongatum may have side effects. These include, for example: vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, constipation, metabolism and nutrition disorders, heart disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders, rash, itching, obstruction, hyperkalemia, bleeding, ulceration stomach ulcer, small erosions in the small intestine.

The frequency of these side effects is unknown.

Kalipoz and pregnancy

There are no contraindications for pregnant women to use Kalipoz Prolongatum tablets. However, both pregnant women and women who have already given birth should consult a doctor before starting the treatment with the preparation. It is only used when its benefits outweigh any possible risks to the child.
