Kalina gordovina – ornamental trees and shrubs
Kalina gordovina is increasingly attracting the attention of gardeners and landscape designers. In addition to useful qualities, this variety has an incredible decorative effect and will decorate any personal plot or park area. The plant is also known by other names – Mediterranean viburnum or felt.
Description and characteristics of the variety
The variety belongs to tall deciduous shrubs. The height of an adult plant can be 6 m. The crown of the viburnum is thick, the leaves are ovoid with a slightly pointed end. The front of the leaf is rough to the touch, and the back is velvety, pubescent. Flowers are collected in carpal inflorescences, corollas of light cream color up to 0,7 cm in diameter. The flowering period lasts from May to June.
Kalina gordovina is often referred to as ornamental shrubs and trees because of its attractiveness throughout the spring-summer season. And even in late autumn, the shrub looks great thanks to its bright red foliage and clusters of multi-colored berries.
After the end of the flowering period, drupes are formed on the brushes. At the beginning of development, they are green and practically merge with the foliage. But as they ripen, they turn red and then gradually turn black
Full ripening of fruits occurs in late September – early October. It is noteworthy that the berries ripen unevenly and both red and black berries are present on one cluster. This gives the bushes an additional decorative effect, but creates certain inconveniences for fruit pickers.
Kalina gordovina – bush care
Gordovina is an undemanding plant. It is highly resistant to frost and disease. It grows well in shady places, but the quality of flowering and fruiting of the culture decreases.
The variety is perfectly adapted to reproduction in urban conditions, therefore it is widely used to create hedges and picturesque compositions in parks and squares. Strong root system allows shrubs to be grown on ravine slopes to prevent soil movement
Caring for the viburnum includes watering, loosening and weeding the trunk circle, as well as timely feeding of the bushes. The plant needs annual sanitary pruning, which removes damaged and weak shoots. Anti-aging pruning is performed every five years to remove perennial branches.
Growing felt viburnum is an interesting and rewarding activity. Indeed, in addition to beauty, it will present you with a healthy and tasty berry that will help fill the vitamin deficiency in winter. Plant this wonderful plant on your plot and you will appreciate this gift of nature!
