Ten years ago, psychology professor Daniel Simons conducted an experiment called the Invisible Gorilla. Its participants watched a video where a gorilla appeared among the ball players on the playground. And none of the spectators noticed her! The experiment received wide acclaim. The scientist repeated it. The results were even more amazing. Those who waited for the gorilla to appear in the frame could not even complete simple tasks: count, for example, how many times the ball changed hands on the court. Those who knew nothing about the «invisible gorilla» performed better. So we tend to overestimate our attentiveness and acquired knowledge. Together with a colleague, Professor Christopher Chabry, Simons conducted many more experiments. Their descriptions and reflections on their results, as well as funny and amazing facts collected by the authors, made up the book. Perhaps the idea of how illusory our belief that we know something for sure can save us from overconfidence and the mistakes it causes.
