Planting and caring for juniper Curivao Gold

In order for the seedling to please the eye for many years and be a real highlight of the landscape, it is necessary to take into account some requirements regarding planting and caring for Chinese juniper.

Seedling and planting preparation

Chinese juniper tolerates drought well, but does not grow well in heavy, clay soils. With a close occurrence of groundwater and on clay soils, when planting, it is necessary to take care of the drainage system. To do this, a twenty-centimeter layer of expanded clay, gravel or broken brick is laid at the bottom of the landing pit.

Seedlings do well in sunny areas with partial shade. Without shading, the color of the Chinese juniper becomes less juicy.

When planting in groups, it should be noted that the diameter of an adult plant reaches 1,5 meters, so the distance between adjacent specimens should be at least 1,5-2 m.

The size of the planting hole depends on the acquired seedling. Assessing the volume of an earthen coma on a juniper, they dig a hole. Sufficient depth for planting juniper – 0,7 m.

Rules of landing

For planting, they dig a hole 2 times larger than the size of the pot in which the seedling is located. It is necessary to ensure that when planting the root neck is not under the ground. It should be located slightly above the ground.

The pit is filled with a mixture of compost, peat and black soil, taken in equal parts. Add complex mineral fertilizer. Seedlings purchased from a nursery most often already have a supply of fertilizers necessary for full growth. In this case, fertilizer should not be added to the planting pit. Such a seedling should be fertilized the next year after planting.

The seedling is set vertically, covered with soil mixture, the earth is tamped down so that a funnel is formed around the juniper. It is necessary to ensure that weeds or lawn grass do not grow near a seedling with a diameter of 70 cm. The trunk circle must be free so that the juniper roots receive the necessary nutrients and oxygen. To improve air exchange, the earth in the hole is periodically loosened.

Important! After planting, the bush must be watered with warm water. 1-2 buckets are poured into each hole.

Watering and top dressing

Young juniper needs watering. Depending on weather conditions, from 1 to 3 buckets are poured into the hole weekly. In case of severe drought, the amount of water is increased, preventing the soil from drying out and cracking.

Adult shrubs are watered no more than 2-3 times per season. On hot days, sprinkling can be carried out, the procedure is postponed until the evening hours, because after sunset the risk of burning a wet crown is minimal.

Fertilize the soil once a year. The event is held in the spring in April-May. Complex compositions are used as fertilizers, for example, Kemira-universal. Adult juniper bushes do not need top dressing, organic matter is enough.

Mulching and loosening

In spring and autumn, the hole is mulched with compost to improve soil structure and prevent freezing of the roots.

Young seedlings of Kurivao Gold need loosening of the soil, which is carried out after watering or rain. It is impossible to allow the earth around the seedling to turn into a hardened layer, this immediately impairs air exchange and negatively affects the appearance of the juniper.

Loosening should be shallow so as not to damage the root system of the seedling. The procedure allows you to cope with another task – the elimination of weeds. During loosening, the grass from the trunk circle is removed along with the roots. Unfolding the mulch protects the near-trunk circle from the appearance of weeds.

Trimming and shaping

Chinese juniper Curivao Gold has become a favorite of many landscape designers because of its unpretentiousness and pruning capability. The crown can be formed in accordance with any idea. Kurivao Gold responds well to a haircut, while the crown becomes more magnificent and more beautiful.

The first time pruning is postponed in early spring. In March, when the temperature rose above +4 ° C, but active growth of branches did not begin, the first pruning is performed. The second time it is allowed to cut the shoots in August.

Important! When pruning, no more than 1/3 of the growth of the current year is removed.

Preparation for winter

Young juniper bushes can freeze in winter, so seedlings require shelter. An adult Chinese juniper can do without shelter, but the layer of mulch material under it should be increased in autumn.

For shelter Kurivao Gold use spruce branches, burlap. To protect the branches from heavy snow, a protective structure in the form of a tripod can be installed above the bush. In autumn, the near-stem circle is dug up, water-charging irrigation is done and insulated with a layer (at least 10 cm) of mulching material: peat, sawdust.

In the spring, from sunburn, they also use burlap, which is covered with a crown.

Reproduction of Chinese juniper Juniperus Chinensis Kuriwao Gold

There are several breeding methods for Chinese juniper:

  • seeds;
  • cuttings;
  • layering.

The most commonly used cutting method. This method allows you to get the required number of seedlings at the same time in a short period of time. Young, but covered with bark shoots from 10 to 20 cm long are separated from the mother bush so that part of the trunk with bark remains on them. Work is carried out in February.

Attention! The cuttings must have at least two internodes.

The bottom of the shoot is cleaned of needles and placed for several hours in a root growth stimulator (Kornevin). A mixture of humus, sand and peat in equal parts is poured into the planting boxes. The cuttings of Kurivao Gold are buried in the ground by 2-3 cm, the boxes are covered with foil and taken out to a lighted place. Water regularly, if the air is too dry, additional spraying is used. The film is removed after rooting. Chinese juniper seedlings are planted in open ground the following year.

Landing by layering is as follows:

  • soil is loosened around an adult juniper;
  • additionally, humus, peat and sand are added to the soil;
  • the side branch is cleaned of needles and bark in several places and bent to the ground;
  • the bent branch is fixed with metal studs and sprinkled with earth;
  • watered regularly;
  • the next year is separated from the mother bush;
  • transplanted to a permanent place when new shoots appear.

Propagation by seeds is a long and troublesome process, so it is rarely used.

Diseases and pests

The danger for young seedlings of Kurivao Gold is a fungus caused by excessive soil moisture. First, the roots turn black, then the top dries and the juniper dies. It is very difficult to cope with the fungus, so the plant is dug up and burned. Prevention is to control soil moisture. Over-wetting should not be allowed.

It is not recommended to plant Chinese juniper Curivao Gold near apple, pear and hawthorn trees. On these crops, there is rust that can go to juniper. If traces of rust appear on the conifer, it is necessary to cut off the affected branches with a sterile pruner and destroy them. Treat with fungicides.

The needles turned brown with a black coating speak of Alternariosis. The reason for the development of the disease is a dense planting and lack of ventilation between the trees. Affected shoots are cut and burned. As a preventive measure, spraying with drugs (Hom, Topaz) is used.

The danger for Chinese juniper Curivao Gold is insect pests:

  • moth;
  • juniper lover;
  • juniper scab;
  • gall midges.

For the processing of Chinese juniper Kurivao Gold, Fufanon, Aktellik are used. They spray not only the crown, but also the ground around the seedling. To combat ants and snails, special insecticidal agents are also used.

Conclusion

Juniper Chinese Curivao Gold is an evergreen coniferous shrub used in landscape design. The plant does not lose its attractiveness in winter, adult specimens are frost-resistant, so they do not require shelter.

Reviews of juniper Curivao Gold

Anna Petrova, 36 years old, Novgorod
I saw a photo of the juniper Curivao Gold and decided to diversify my garden a little. I bought a Chinese juniper sapling in a nursery, so the guarantee that it will be accepted is much higher than waiting until it grows from a cutting. I planted it in a flower bed, covered it for the first year in winter so that young shoots would not freeze. The juniper Curivao Gold overwintered well, pruned in the spring. It grows quickly, this year I plan to plant a few more Chinese specimens.
