Shallow water jumping
At the beginning of July, a 27-year-old resident of Ostrów Wielkopolski rented a canoe in one of the agritourist farms to go swimming on the Prosna River. At the height of Wielowieś, he stopped and jumped head-to-head into the river. The water depth at this point was only half a meter. The man suffered a spine injury.
The spokesman for the hospital in Kalisz, Paweł Gawroński, to whom the victim was sent, told PAP that he was in danger of a permanent disability. «It is now known that his lower limbs are paralyzed and that he cannot feel his legs. There was also a very serious paresis in the area of the hands, he can move the shoulders, but there is paresis in the wrists »- said the spokesman.

The 35-year-old man who jumped a dozen or so days earlier from the pier into the lake in Skorzęcin in Greater Poland was also not lucky. At this point, the lake was shallow, not even half a meter. The man injured his spine. A helicopter flew to the scene to transport the accident victim to the hospital.

We asked a sports orthopedist what could actually happen as a result of jumping into the water and hitting the bottom or an obstacle. Injuries vary. It can be a slight twist and strain on ligaments and muscles, but it can also result in fractures.
– These fractures do not have to be serious and have serious consequences. If we are lucky, it ends with immobilization in an orthopedic collar and pain – explained Dr. Krzesimir Sieczych, sports orthopedist from the Carolina Medical Center.
If there is a dislocated spine fracture and damage to the spinal cord, there are various degrees of paresis (depending on the damaged section of the spine).
– It may be the paresis of the legs, torso, pelvis – as a consequence, we are doomed to a wheelchair for the rest of our lives. If damage occurs at the higher levels of the spine, there is also paresis of the hands, and in the worst case, death may occur – the specialist warns.
