Our heroine with a knee injury experienced this firsthand.

I am familiar with pain in the knee joint firsthand. Several years ago in the winter I fell unsuccessfully and hit my kneecap on the curb. The result is a meniscus rupture and urgent surgery. Then, in one of the city hospitals in St. Petersburg, I underwent an operation under general anesthesia, which I endured very hard, and the rehabilitation was long and painful. It took me several months to get back on line and return to my normal life.

Not so long ago, I again encountered an injury, but this time to the left knee. The MRI showed that the meniscus was damaged. The desire to go back to the surgical table and experience all the “delights” of the operation again, I was not ready. But a friend advised a friend orthopedist-traumatologist. And I decided to make an appointment.

The doctor looked at the results of my MRI and confirmed the diagnosis: meniscus rupture. However, instead of the traditional operation, I was offered to do arthroscopy.

“This is a modern endoscopic operation that allows you to treat complex joint pathologies without incisions and opening the joint capsule,” the doctor explained. – For the treatment of the joint, only 2-3 punctures are enough, into which the endoscope is inserted. Thanks to a miniature camera at the endoscope tip, the image is displayed in the highest resolution and 40x magnification. Therefore, the doctor can perform the necessary manipulations, clearly seeing everything that happens in the joint.

Another good news for me: the operation is performed not under general anesthesia, but under local anesthesia. After discussing all the nuances, I decided to have the operation, passed all the necessary tests, and the doctor and I chose the date of the operation.

Running a little ahead, I will say that everything went well. I received several pain-relieving injections in my knee. I was conscious, communicated with the doctor, he supported and encouraged me, I did not feel any pain. Yes, I felt that something was being done to my knee, but it was not scary. On the contrary, I watched with interest what was happening on the screen.

The whole procedure took no more than an hour. After that, for a while, I moved to the ward. But on the same day I returned home – no bed rest. However, they asked to limit the load on the knee. The doctor also recommended taking pain relievers in case of possible discomfort. However, the pills were not useful to me.

Two days later, I independently came for the dressing, and after a week I forgot to think about the injury and the operation.
