Jetlag and skin

Having flown half the world, you finally found yourself in Elysium, where there is eternal summer, warm sea, white sand and juicy fruits. But the first days in paradise can be overshadowed by hellish costs. Feeling not very good, insomnia, appearance – the embodiment of fatigue. Jetlag is to blame. What to do?

What is jetlag

Jetlag (jet lag) – failure of internal bio-, or circadian rhythms. A rather unpleasant condition that occurs as a result of changing time zones. It is also called desynchronosis.

So, paradise. It would seem that the local clock shows that it’s time to have lunch, but nothing gets into your mouth and irresistibly sleepy. Or vice versa, the miracle island is ready to plunge into the arms of Morpheus, and in their native expanses everyone is just waking up. It is very difficult to put yourself to bed when you don’t feel like it at all and, on the contrary, to get out from under the covers when it is deep night in your homeland. Jetlag manifests itself in a complex way.

  • Insomnia.

  • Decreased concentration of attention.

  • Bad mood.

  • Digestive problems.

  • Dryness and decreased skin tone.

This is not a complete list of possible manifestations of jet lag. The reaction is always individual, because we are talking about switching at the level of the hormonal system. And the hormone melatonin is primarily responsible for biorhythms.

Business Americans have calculated that as a result of jet lag, or rather, erroneous business decisions made through his fault on business trips, annual losses amount to $ 70 billion.

How does jetlag affect the skin?

Since we are talking about melatonin, which is also called the sleep hormone, jet lag affects the skin in exactly the same way as a deficiency of this substance. That is, even on vacation, the skin looks like after a severe lack of sleep. External manifestations:

  • dull color,

  • fine wrinkles,

  • dryness up to peeling,

  • circles under the eyes,

  • tired look,

  • puffiness

The negative effect is exacerbated by the nuances associated with the flight.

  • Dehydration of the skin: the air is too dry on board.

  • Violation of blood circulation due to low mobility if the flight is long.

How to deal with jetlag

Avoid common mistakes.

  • No need to lull yourself with alcohol both on board the plane and upon arrival.

  • Don’t try to cheer up by drinking coffee.

These actions, although their goals are diametrically opposed, will lead to the same result – dehydration of the body and even greater imbalance of the biological clock.

Take care of skin that is experiencing additional stress.

Before the trip

  1. Avoid injections and peels two weeks before departure. If the procedures are only relaxing, nourishing and moisturizing, soft massage.

  2. Follow the drinking regime: 30 ml of water per 1 kg of weight.

  3. Adjust the diet so that it is dominated by light food: eat more salads, fruits, vegetables, cereals. A sharp change in time zones is a serious burden on the entire body, you should not force it to work in an enhanced mode. The diet will support the digestive system and charge the body with vitamins as a whole.

There is also the so-called jet lag diet. It is advised to switch to it 4 days before departure. This diet involves alternating days when the diet is dominated by protein foods, with days when the diet includes the foods described above.

In flight

Feel free to ask the flight attendant for another glass of water.

  • Drink water without gas. Choose tomato juice from juices – it helps to maintain mineral balance, and for some reason it seems tastier at altitude.

  • Grab a refreshing mist or spray of thermal water into the salon.

  • Do not put on makeup if the flight is going to be long.

  • Apply moisturizer to your face, around your eyes, and on your hands.

  • Create the most comfortable conditions for yourself, try to fall asleep. And if you can’t sleep, take a walk around the salon from time to time to restore blood circulation.

A sleep mask is an indispensable thing on an airplane. Even if you can’t sleep, it will help you just relax.

After arrival

  1. If you are flying to warmer climes and arriving during the day, take care of sun protection while still in the cabin.

  2. Powerful hydration and cosmetics with antioxidants will help the skin recover from the stress associated with jet lag.

  3. Watch your drinking regimen and stick to a light diet. Proper nutrition significantly speeds up not only the “exit” from the jet lag, but also acclimatization in general.

In the early days, allow yourself a short (!) daytime sleep. Only, of course. not in the sun.

The set, which will help the skin cope with jetlag faster, includes:

  • sleep mask, because melatonin is produced only in the dark;

  • thermal spray;

  • moisturizing and soothing cosmetic mask;

  • patches for the skin around the eyes.
