Jefferson’s (Jeffersons)

Jefferson’s (Jeffersons) is a bourbon of the American company Castle Brands, a manufacturer of premium and super premium whiskey. The brand’s drink recipes are created as a result of long-term experiments on mixing alcohols with great age. Whiskey is made in four stages, which include distillation, barrel maturation, blending and additional bottle aging.

Historical information

Whiskey Jefferson’s was created in 1997 by McClain & Kyne, founded by Trey Zoeller and his father Chet, a famous researcher and historian of American bourbon. The grandmother of the eldest member of the family was also engaged in distillation; the archives contain data on the arrest of a lady in 1799 for the illegal production and sale of strong alcoholic beverages.

Winemakers solved the problem by mixing four types of spirits with different aging periods, and got a drink with a complex and outstanding taste. It was decided to name the new whiskey in honor of the third US President Thomas Jefferson. The product successfully launched in the domestic market, but without serious investments, it was difficult for the owners to achieve resounding success.

In 2005, the founders had to sell McClain & Kyne to a large American manufacturer and distributor of alcohol Castle Brands, which managed to promote the brand and bring it to the international market. Trey Zoeller stayed with the company and continues his experiments to create unusual types of bourbon. Jefferson’s line includes more than a dozen types of whiskey, most of which are produced in small batches.

Interesting Facts

  1. Zoeller is working on ways to quickly age whiskey, his experiments traditionally attract close attention of the press. In creating the Ocean line, the winemaker uses an unconventional approach – barrels of bourbon aged from 6 to 8 years are loaded into the hold of an ocean liner, where they travel for another four years. As a result, the drink acquires the aroma of rum caramel and the taste of sea salt.
  2. In October 2019, Castle Brands became part of the French alcohol holding Pernod Ricard, the second largest producer and distributor of spirits in the world.
