Jean-Alfred Villein-Mare was born on December 11, 1913 in the city of Cherbourg. His father was a veterinarian, but Jean did not remember him, since his parents divorced when he was five years old. From an early age, the boy dreamed of becoming an artist.

At the age of thirteen, he leaves school and goes to work. He worked part-time in a radio workshop, at a factory, was a photographer’s apprentice. In spite of everything, he remained true to his dream of acting in films and did not stop sending his photographs to various film studios in the hope that he would be noticed.

Mare entered the acting department of the Paris Conservatory, but was defeated three times. Yet in 1930 he was enrolled in the Charles Dyullen School of Acting. Three years later, he was given a small role, after which he was constantly invited to play various episodes in films.

Acquaintance with the director Jean Cocteau influenced the career and fate of the future actor. In 1938, he offered Mara a role in the movie Knights of the Round Table. Subsequently, Jean played in most of his films.

After the outbreak of World War II, the actor went to the front. There he drove a fuel truck. For the courage and courage shown during the period of hostilities, Jean was awarded the Military Cross.

Career

In 1943, after the movie The Eternal Return, he became a star. But, despite the success, he was always critical of himself and did not suffer from star fever. He remained as good-natured and natural as before.

Since 1968, Mare began to study pottery and sculptural art. His work was highly appreciated by Pablo Picasso himself. One of his most popular works is the sculpture “The Man Walking Through the Wall”, which can be seen in Montmartre in Paris.

He also wrote memoirs. During this time, he rarely played in theater and cinema. In the period from 1970 to 1995, Mare starred in only seven films.

In 1975 his autobiographical book Stories from My Life was published. Two years later, another book was published – “The Tales of Jean Mare”.

He independently performed all the illustrations for it. He was also fond of painting. An exhibition of his paintings was held in Paris in 1995. The artist Marais was awarded the Order of the Arts of France.

During the war, Jean married the actress Mila Parelli, but two years later they broke up. Mare was gay.

With age, Mare began to faint due to injuries sustained while performing stunts. After treatment at the clinic, he completely changed his lifestyle, spent a lot of time in solitude. Jean Marais died in 1998 in France in Cannes, where he was buried. His height is 1,82 m, his zodiac sign is Sagittarius.
