Non-directive hypnosis – this new method of psychotherapy – was developed by the prominent American psychiatrist and psychologist Milton Erickson. Non-directive hypnosis – this new method of psychotherapy – was developed by the prominent American psychiatrist and psychologist Milton Erickson. Like traditional hypnosis, “new” involves suggestion and work with a person who is in an altered state of consciousness, when the focus of his attention is directed not to the external (as usual), but to the inner world. But unlike classical hypnosis, Erickson’s is distinguished by the absence of authoritarianism in the position of the hypnotherapist. During the session, he plunges into a superficial (controlled) trance, which allows him to sensitively model the state of the client, he also uses a special metaphorical language, tells fairy tales, parables, which opens up access to the internal resources of the unconscious client. Jean Becchio and Charles Juslin, the authors of this famous book (this is the second edition in Russia), are students and followers of Erickson. They not only describe an extraordinary technique for inducing a state of hypnotic trance, but also support it with a presentation of the theoretical foundations of this original and effective method of psychotherapy.
