Jardiance is a diabetes medicine that is suitable for use in adults with type 2 diabetes. The medicine is designed to control the patient’s blood glucose levels. However, some precautions should be taken when using Jardiance. The preparation can be used in the form of tablets and injections.
Jardiance is a medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes in adults. Its active substance is empaglyphosin, which blocks proteins in the kidneys. Unfortunately, Jardiance is not suitable for the treatment of type 1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis. Check what you should know before starting treatment.
Jardiance – action
The active ingredient in Jardiance is empaglyphosine, which blocks the sodium-glucose cotransporter inhibitor 2. This allows glucose, sodium and water to be removed from the urine. As a result, the level of glucose in the blood is lowered, which is too high in type 2 diabetes.
Jardiance is suitable for adults (over 18 years of age), but when the disease cannot be controlled through diet and exercise. The drug is recommended for patients who cannot take metformin. Importantly, Jardiance can be taken with other diabetes medications.
When using Jardiance, you should continue to control your diet and take care of the right amount of exercise. The drug can be administered orally and by injection.
Jardiance – indications
The indication for the use of Jardiance is the treatment of type 2 diabetes in patients over 18 years of age. Its task is to lower the glucose level. It may be monotherapy when both diet and exercise are ineffective and the patient cannot take metformin. Jardiance can also be used with other medications (including insulin).
Jardiance – contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of the active or excipients is a contraindication to the use of Jardiance.
Jardiance – precautions
Jardiance cannot be used in people with type 1 diabetes and ketoacidosis. When using the drug, you should take into account the appearance of diabetic ketoacidosis. Its symptoms include nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, thirst, confusion, difficulty breathing or sleepiness.
Jardiance treatment should be discontinued if diabetic ketoacidosis is suspected or diagnosed.
The drug should also not be used in people with end-stage renal disease and people on dialysis. Before starting treatment, it is a good idea to do a kidney function assessment. It is also not recommended for people over 85 years of age.
Jardiance can also lead to a drop in blood pressure, so people with cardiovascular diseases, those treated for hypertension with periods of hypotension, and people over 75 should be especially careful. It is also worth monitoring the body’s hydration, especially if there is a suspicion that dehydration may occur. The drug should also be discontinued in the event of complicated urinary tract infections.
Jardiance should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women. You should also inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, as Jardiance may interact with other medications.
Jardiance – side effects
One of the most common side effects is hypoglycaemia. Vaginal candidiasis, vaginitis, vulvitis and glans inflammation, and other inflammations of the genital organs may also develop as a result of the use of the drug. There are also urinary tract infections, itching, and frequent urination.
Jardiance – dosage
Jardiance is used orally. In adults, the starting dose, regardless of treatment, is 10 mg once a day. A maximum of 25 mg of Jardiance is per patient per day. In special cases, the dosage is determined individually by the doctor, depending on the patient’s condition.
Jardiance can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water. Take the missed dose of Jardiance as soon as possible.
