The school of object relations is one of the directions of modern psychoanalysis. Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott, Michael Balint, John Bowlby, Margaret Mahler – these world-famous and very different psychoanalysts, developing the ideas of Sigmund Freud, gave them a completely new sound. Agreeing with the idea of the founder of psychoanalysis about the stages of a child’s mental development, they argued that the main driving force of this development is not instincts (or drives), but the need for relationships with objects (with the mother, with other adults significant to the child). The book by American psychoanalysts Jill and David Scharff is unique in that it not only introduces us to different theories of object relations, but also shows how they can be applied in practice: in individual, group and family psychotherapy.
