This procedure can be called a miracle of the XXI century. With its help, doctors annually help thousands of people who are desperate to get pregnant and give birth to become parents. But there are still many prejudices and concerns around IVF. Which of this is true and which is a myth, Nail Nuriyev, a fertility specialist, chief physician of the Nuriev Clinic, told Woman’s Day.
“IVF is performed only for female infertility”
– It is a myth. IVF is carried out with female, male infertility, and with their combination.
“With IVF, conception occurs the first time”
– With IVF with the participation of a young woman under 30, the chances of becoming pregnant are approximately 45% per one transferred embryo. The older the woman, the lower these indicators. Even a perfectly healthy woman is not obliged to become pregnant in the month in which she wants. This is a very complex process: the 23 chromosomes must match on the male and female sides. In fact, our women become pregnant within one to two or three transfers.
“After IVF, there is always a multiple pregnancy”
– Recently, on the contrary, after IVF a singleton pregnancy occurs, because we transfer one embryo at a time. That is, these two issues are closely related. If a woman wants to get pregnant as soon as possible, then she needs to transfer three embryos. If she wants to have a healthy baby, she has to carry it three times one at a time. This is the principled position of our clinic, as, incidentally, in world practice. Until the age of 36, we recommend transferring only one embryo.
“Children born as a result of IVF are weak and painful”
Children born to a woman at 40 are weaker and more painful than those born at 20. And women don’t go to IVF at the age of 20. They usually come closer to 40 years old. And when conception occurs at 40 years of age, pregnancy proceeds in a completely different way than even at 30. Therefore, we can say that “eco” pregnancy does not have any risks compared to a normal pregnancy (in women of the same age).
“IVF provokes cancer”
– Women who have no children have breast cancer 10 times more often than, for example, mothers of three children. A woman who has breastfed three children (at least one year at a time) has significantly less risk of developing breast cancer. At the same time, she receives a kind of vaccination during pregnancy: a large amount of progesterone leads to the fact that there is no ovulation, so there is no excess of estrogen either. And this reduces the chances of encountering various types of cancer: bowel cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, uterine endometrium. Moreover, the risks of getting sick with most diseases that are not called cancer, but are precancerous, are reduced: endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids (the real scourge of modern women).
“Infertility treatment and IVF procedure are very expensive!”
– The concept of expensive is very relative. It depends on what to compare with. Many people are accustomed to the fact that medical services should be provided free of charge. Therefore, anything other than zero is considered expensive. Without seeing what serious technology is being used, one might really think that prices are overpriced. And when you start looking at what is actually being done (when a sperm cell 50 microns long and 3-5 microns in diameter is placed inside the egg), you understand that such serious technologies cannot be cheap. One IVF procedure in our clinic costs from 100 to 130 thousand rubles. Whether it is expensive or not, when compared, for example, with the cost of a car or furniture, it is up to people to decide. It all depends on the priorities.
