IUD – advantages and disadvantages of insertion

Its shape resembles the letter T. It is one of the most effective methods of contraception. Gynecologists recommend it to women who have already given birth and are not planning to have babies soon, as well as for those who cannot use oral contraception.

Traditional and hormonal

Spirals were recognized as an effective and safe contraceptive in the XNUMXs. Today, only two types are actually used in Europe – traditional and hormonal. The first are made of plastic with the addition of copper or silver, the second use the action of progesterone, which is gradually released into the body. Their high efficiency is ensured by multidimensional action. The very presence of the IUD causes a harmless inflammation in the uterus, which prevents the possible implantation of a fertilized egg. Additionally, the inserts containing copper ions show spermicidal properties. In turn, the progesterone released from the hormonal contraceptive spiral affects the density of the cervical mucus.

Quickly and without pain

After appropriate tests, the spiral is inserted into the uterus using a special applicator. After the correct positioning, the threads attached to it are cut so that they do not interfere with everyday functioning, and an ultrasound examination is performed to check if the position of the insert is correct. The procedure itself is painless and takes about 15 minutes, although some women complain of some discomfort. Despite its high effectiveness, this method of contraception is not suitable for everyone. Contraindications include: birth defects of the uterus, inflammation of the appendages, erosions and fibroids, cancers of the breast and reproductive system. The first follow-up visit to the gynecologist should take place two weeks after insertion, and subsequent checks are planned every six months. The contraceptive effect of the IUD lasts for 3 to 6 years.

Advantages of the spiral

Unlike the contraceptive pill, you don’t have to remember about it every day. This is more expensive – depending on the type, we will pay for the spiral from 100 to 900 PLN, but the cost is spread over many years. If you choose an IUD with a hormone that inhibits endometrial hyperplasia, your periods will become less heavy and their duration will be shorter by up to 2 days. What’s more, hormonal IUDs prevent the development of uterine polyps and fibroids. One of the spiral’s greatest advantages, however, is its effectiveness – all IUDs are the second most reliable (after oral hormonal contraception) method of contraception. Their effectiveness is estimated at over 98%. The Pearl Index, which describes the number of pregnancies among hundreds of women using a given contraceptive method per year, ranges from 0,09 to 1,26 for this method. You can now buy an intrauterine device tailored to your needs at Medonet Market. Once the IUD is placed in the uterus, it becomes imperceptible and will allow you to enjoy a successful sex life without the risk of becoming pregnant.

Spiral disadvantages

There are also disadvantages to the IUD. In the first month after inserting the coil, an additional method of contraception should be used, which will protect us against unwanted pregnancy. If you opt for a traditional IUD, your initial cycle-related bleeding may be more severe or take longer than usual. Also remember that compared to other methods of contraception (condoms), the IUD does not protect us against sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, syphilis or gonorrhea. Like any method of contraception, the coil can cause side effects which may not occur in every woman. These include: abnormal menstrual bleeding, abdominal pain during menstruation, vaginal discharge, increased body temperature and intermenstrual spotting. The IUD can sometimes lead to infection as well, and it is possible to shift it.
