Ito’s peonies: varieties, planting

The amazingly beautiful yellow Ito peonies owe their origin to the romantic breeder Toichi Ito. A talented Japanese scientist took up their creation in 1948. Hybrids bloomed after his death and to this day delight us with their grace and unpretentious disposition.

The work of the Japanese scientist was continued by breeders. As a result, new varieties of hybrid were developed. According to the latest data, breeders have created more than 35 varieties.

Ito-peonies are worthy representatives of their species

All varieties of the Ito hybrid are united by the following characteristics:

  • height 50-90 cm;
  • perennial;
  • densely leafy;
  • growing;
  • long blooming.

Peonies bloom until frost. Some change color in the autumn. Ito in appearance resemble tree peonies. The described peony is distinguished by spots located in the center of the flower, and later flowering.

The most popular varieties are:

  • Lollipop;
  • Lemon Dream;
  • Copper Kettle;
  • “Kellis Memory”;
  • Keneri Brilliante;
  • Dark Eyes;
  • “Barcella” and t. d.

Ito cultivars differ in shades, colors, sizes and shapes of buds.

Ito hybrids reproduce in two ways – by root branches and cuttings. Grown or purchased cuttings will take root faster in drained, heated and fed soil. The plant should be planted in September-October before the onset of frost. A young root system needs regular watering. Make sure that the roots do not dry out. Once the plant is rooted, natural watering is sufficient.

There is no need to build supports for Ito’s stems. Strong, woody roots over time do not sag or break, like the roots of herbaceous peonies

We recommend removing old stems by winter so that young green stems take their place in spring. It is advisable to cover the plant with sawdust or dried leaves for the period of cold weather.

Hybrids are unpretentious and do not require constant maintenance. If their planting was successful, then the plant itself will regain its place in the sun. In dry summers, it should be watered. At the same time, do not overdo it with watering. Excess water can kill the flower. To prevent Ito from rotting during the rainy season, use “Gamair”, “Alirin” or “Glyokladin”. Mineral mixtures, ash and dolomite flour are suitable as top dressing.

Ito have earned the love of gardeners in many countries of the world. Flowers are magnificent decorations for flower beds and summer cottages. By planting several varieties of a plant at once, you can create fragrant compositions that are pleasing to the eye.
