😉 Greetings to travel lovers! Friends, if you have not yet decided where to spend your vacation – choose Rimini! I hope the article “Italy: Rimini Attractions” will be of interest to you.
This ancient city is located on the Adriatic coast. The distance from Rome to Rimini is 360 km. My husband and I rested here for a week. 😉 It was a wonderful and unforgettable stay!
Italy: the city of Rimini
The city of Rimini is famous for its rich historical heritage and, of course, for its beautiful golden beaches. Indeed, since the middle of the century before last, all the aristocracy of Europe came here to sunbathe and swim in the sea.
In 1843, the opening of the Privileged Beach, intended for noble persons, took place here. The coastline began to be built up with luxurious mansions and villas, and in 1907 the legendary Grand Hotel was opened.
But the city of Rimini is also known for the fact that the Rubicon River flows here, which Julius Caesar crossed with his troops on his way to Rome.
In the town square of Tre Martyri, he gathered his army and addressed him with a speech. He said that if he did not overcome the Rubicon, it would be a disaster for him. And if the Rubicon is overcome, it will be a disaster for his enemies and the whole world. The Rubicon was taken and the Roman Republic soon fell.
Hence the catch phrase “Cross the Rubicon”. This means: to commit an act that can no longer be canceled, to make an irrevocable decision.
Attractions in Rimini
Two main attractions have been preserved in the city since ancient Roman times. Arch, built under the emperor Augustus and the bridge of Tiberius, the construction of which began under Augustus, and ended under Tiberius.
This Arch of Augustus is the oldest Roman arch in Italy. Once upon a time, a sculptural composition in the form of a quadriga pulled by horses ruled by the emperor was installed on the arch.
However, in the Middle Ages, the quadriga was replaced by serf battlements. On the sides of the arch there are four medallions with images of ancient gods.
The imposing arched stone structure of the ancient Roman Tiberius Bridge spans the Marecchia River. Despite its age, the bridge still serves locals faithfully. Moreover, not only pedestrians move along it, but also vehicles.
True, in the Middle Ages it was destroyed by the Goths. The bridge was rebuilt in 1680. Once upon a time, during the reign of the Romans, the river was fuller. To slow down its flow, breakwaters were attached to the bridge supports.
In the center of ancient Rimini stands the Tempio Malatestiano Temple. All excursions usually begin with an inspection of this place. Temple in the Franciscan Gothic style designed by the famous architect Alberti. The ruler of Rimini wanted to use it as a family mausoleum.
Unfortunately, due to political differences, it was never completed. Inside the temple is Giotto’s creation “The Crucifixion”.
Place Cavour welcomes visitors with magnificent palaces that surround it, a statue of Pope Paul V and a white marble pine cone fountain. The palaces have dovetail-shaped battlements (for defensive purposes). On the square is the building of the Teatro Kommunale – the city’s opera house.
About the Pine Fountain in Rimini
Almost all articles on the Internet say that the “Bump” fountain was built in 1543 and that Leonardo da Vinci admired this fountain.
Knowing the years of the life of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), this fact never ceases to amaze me! Therefore, more accurate information: the “Bump” fountain has existed since 1400. An extensive restoration of the fountain was made in 1543. Now everything is the same!
Sigismondo Castle – the seat of the ruler of Rimini is one of the local attractions. Today the fortress houses the Museum with a rich collection of Asian, American (pre-Columbian), African art and the Ethnographic Museum.
On the Tre Martyri square, where Julius Caesar once performed, is the Palazzo Brioli, which once belonged to local nobles. Later, the building of the palace was given over to a scientific observatory. Next to the palace is the Clock Tower, famous for its “Perpetual Astrological Calendar” clock.
