The record low number of three deaths from COVID-19 was recorded last day in Italy, the country’s health ministry said on Sunday. 218 new infections were detected. This is the lowest number since the start of the epidemic in February. Is the Italian epidemic about to end?
The official number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Italy is 244. Almost 434 are cured. people, 197 people died. Currently, about 35 are infected. people; by 045 less than the day before.
- Good news is coming from Lombardy – no deaths have been recorded in the last XNUMX hours. It is this region that has been most affected by the coronavirus epidemic
- The difficult situation is in the capital of Lazio. The authorities called on the inhabitants to wear masks. “Otherwise, everything will have to be shut down again,” they warn
- The tourists who visited the island of Bari during the weekend in large numbers do not seem to worry about the coronavirus, regardless of the sanitary requirements. The mayor had to ask for support from the police
Lombardy – the first day with no deaths since February
The very low death toll in Italy is mainly due to the better situation in the most-hit Lombardy epidemic, where – as announced by the region’s authorities – no one has died from COVID-19 in the last 22 hours. The first time this happened since February XNUMX, when the first coronavirus infected person in the region died in Casalpusterlengo near Lodi.
In Lombardy, 33 new infections have been recorded since Saturday.
In Tuscany, it was reported that for the first time since early March, there is not a single patient infected with the coronavirus in intensive care units. Nobody died within XNUMX hours either.
- This hospital was the epicenter of the epidemic. Now it’s COVID-19 free
Therefore, there are many indications that the epidemic situation in Italy is becoming more and more under control. However, there are regions where there is still cause for concern.
Lazio: “wear masks or you will have to close everything”
The authorities of the capital city of the Italian region of Lazio called on Sunday residents to wear protective masks. Otherwise, the lockdown will have to be announced again, warned Alessio D’Amato, head of the health department.
«I am asking you to use masks or you will have to close everything again. We cannot go back to what was and waste our efforts so far »- he appealed to the inhabitants.
D’Amato also warned residents of the capital region not to downplay the threat, citing Catalonia, for example, where there has been a sharp increase in new SARS-CoV-2 infections.

On Sunday, July 19, 17 new cases of the coronavirus were reported in Lazio, 10 of which involve people arriving from other countries. They include six from Bangladesh, two from Pakistan and one each from India and Iraq. This new phenomenon is known in Italy as the “imported coronavirus”.
Bari: the island is crowded, the mayor calls the police
The situation is also difficult on the Italian island of Bari, which was visited by real crowds of tourists last weekend, moderately concerned about sanitary restrictions.
The crowd on the island prompted Mayor Marino Lembo to write a letter to the carabinieri, police and authorities in the nearby province of Naples, requesting that the number of officers be increased on weekends.
Lembo, quoted by the Italian media, explained that police and carabinieri not only have to control the situation in the port and the disembarkation of tourists, but also the main square and streets on Capri, overrun by crowds where social distancing is not respected.
Italy must defend itself more resolutely against the coronavirus, says Advisor to the Minister of Health, Professor Walter Ricciardi. He mentioned schools, flights from the US, full airports and planes, and different regulations in different regions as weaknesses in the strategy.
In an interview published on Wednesday in the daily La Repubblica, the hygiene professor expressed the opinion that the coronavirus has not subsided, as some experts say.
“It is a formidable beast that has developed to spread,” warned Ricciardi.
The expert also raised the issue of cases of “imported” infections recorded in Italy, ie from people coming from abroad. In his opinion, the current steps are not enough, such as refusing to admit people arriving from risk countries to Italy and the quarantine obligation for those arriving from countries outside the Schengen area.

“We have to block flights from some US states. What is happening there is disturbing. The country we are all looking at for research has no control “over the coronavirus,” said Ricciardi, who is adviser to health minister Roberto Speranza.
“We must – as he pointed out – defend ourselves against countries that are doing little or nothing to stop the virus.”
Ricciardi assessed that the weak point in the fight against infection are also means of transport, especially planes, which fly full and where social distancing is not respected when checking in, boarding and disembarking.
