IT specialist, designer, marketer: what professions do parents choose for children

The Russian educational platform Skillbox conducted a study among parents who live in million-plus cities. The purpose of the survey is to find out what kind of education parents want for their children.

What’s going on

  • According to the study, a vast majority of 85,8% of respondents want their children to be educated in the IT field, namely in development, working with data, cybersecurity and DevOps software development methodology.
  • 87% of parents who consider an IT education to be the best choice for their child think IT jobs will continue to pay well for the next 10-30 years.
  • More than half (52,5%) of respondents consider design to be a promising area. Parents note that work in this area can not only bring a decent income, but also contribute to personal and professional development.
  • 30% of the parents surveyed noted marketing as the desired profession for their child. 28,3% – science, 22,5% – construction and real estate, and 21,7% – industry, music, film and creative professions.
  • The least promising industries, according to parents, are the civil service (53%), the restaurant and hotel business (41,9%), the fashion and beauty industry (41%) and tourism (39,3%).
  • Skillbox also learned what skills parents consider most important for their children. 82,8% answered that these are skills that are needed in the job. 81,8% – critical thinking, 72,1% – the ability to make decisions independently, 69,7% – emotional intelligence and the ability to negotiate, 63,1% – knowledge of foreign languages.
  • 90,9% of respondents want their children to have two or more majors.
  • 71% of parents want their children to work for themselves.
  • In total, 64 thousand people from large cities throughout our country took part in the survey. The relative majority of respondents (69,4%) are women.

What does it mean

According to a study by Uchi.ru, YaKlass and residents of the information technology cluster of the Skolkovo Foundation, only 6% of today’s schoolchildren are guided by the advice of their parents when choosing a future profession. The majority of schoolchildren (53%) choose a specialty depending on their skills and interests.

YaKlass surveyed Russian schoolchildren in December 2021 to find out who they want to be. 48% said they want to be entrepreneurs, 17% – full-time employees in a Russian company, 16% – to work in an international company or as self-employed to cooperate with different companies, 3% said they did not plan to work.
