It’s time to retire: 10 signs that your interior is outdated
Few people like to make repairs. Dust, noise, expenses … But sometimes it is just necessary. You don’t want your apartment to look frankly “grandmother’s”, do you?
It may seem to you that the atmosphere in the house looks quite normal: neat, cozy. And therefore, you are sincerely perplexed when your friends are unobtrusively interested in whether you are planning to make repairs. In fact, you should listen to your girlfriends. After all, you are accustomed to your nest and cannot help but notice that the situation is hopelessly outdated.
But you don’t need to expect critical remarks from the guests. There are 10 sure signs that it’s time to update the interior.
1. Wallpaper
Let’s make a reservation, not all wallpapers are “shot”. First of all, this is a photo wallpaper. It has long been necessary to forget about them once and for all, as well as about paper wallpaper in principle. The second is shiny wallpaper with an elaborate pattern. Palace lilies, monograms – no need for that. Moreover, there is no need for cheap paper wallpaper. A good option is paintable vinyl wallpaper or simply painted walls. There is only one caveat: the walls for painting must be perfectly flat.
2. Ceramics with a pattern
Ceramic tiles should also be chosen meticulously. No – to the whole stories, laid out on the walls of the bathroom and kitchen. Yes – to the mosaic. Well, it is also not worth emphasizing the kitchen theme with separate tiles with images of food or inscriptions. Remember, in Soviet times, there were decals that were glued to the tiles? Exactly.
3. Ceiling tiles
This is a terrible relic of the late 90s and XNUMXs. Especially tiles with a relief – a claim for “expensive-rich”. Not only does it look pretty ridiculous, it also visually reduces the height of the ceiling. In addition, designers agree that stretch ceilings have become obsolete too. Especially multi-level structures with complex illumination. The best option is a perfectly flat white ceiling.
4. Whimsical furniture
Wave-like shapes, armrests with mini-columns, prints with monstrous flowers or “animal” motifs – it’s time to give up all this. As well as from the decor in the form of stucco molding, patterns, bas-reliefs and other delights. Simple clear lines, laconic forms – this is now in trend. And don’t listen to sellers who call this furniture “designer”. Real designers cry tears of blood when they see waves of chipboard. And we sincerely hope that you have already parted with all the polished remnants of the Soviet past.
5. Lambrequins
Complex structures on the windows are also the day before yesterday. You don’t live in a theater, why do you need a monster with many brushes, folds, lambrequins, flounces and ruffles? Better replace it all with blackout curtains (you can even roll-curtain format) and light graceful curtains. By the way, designers have even included such complex curtains in the list of the ugliest interior trends of all time.
6. Computer desk
Racks for CDs, a shelf for a keyboard, a separate compartment for a system unit, a bunch of some shelves and drawers. When computers first began to appear in apartments, such monsters were in vogue. Now they are just taking up space in vain. Moreover, stationary computers are increasingly being abandoned in favor of laptops or monoblocks. For them, just a comfortable table is enough.
7. Drywall
Plasterboard partitions now cause hysterics among designers. Especially when you consider that such partitions were usually made wavy, pretentious. Visual zoning is in vogue now. For him, partitions are not required at all. And if you really want to, it is better to give preference to wood or glass. Such a solution will save space and give the interior modernity.
8. Rococo in Khrushchev
Or in the studio. Yes, in any small standard apartment, the palace looks ridiculous. A picture in a heavy frame with a fancy pattern. Chandelier. Gilding. Stucco molding. No and no again. Certain elements of palace luxury look strange. Eclecticism is eclectic, but it is quite difficult to fit rococo into hi-tech. An interior entirely in this style is even stranger. The exception is you live in a palace. If so, we are jealous.
9. Fakes
Plastic imitation of stone or brick, marble or wood-effect adhesive film is always awful. Yes, sometimes it seems like a good idea to refresh the look of an old stool. Or update your kitchen with a plastic backsplash underneath the stone. Antique, gold – tricks from the same opera. Do not flatter yourself – such attempts look pretty pathetic. And yes, cheap.
10. Shower cabin
Oddly enough, but the freestanding shower stall also fell under the distribution. According to designers, it looks cheap and ugly. But it was once fashionable! It is advised to replace it with a built-in shower room with a glass partition.
11. Snow-white technique
No, sometimes it is justified: a white kettle, a white refrigerator, everything is white. But now designers are already moving away from all-encompassing white, in its place is taken by restrained neutral tones such as ivory. The pseudo-Scandinavian style, which boils down to the dominance of white, has long been boring for everyone. Besides, white technique is boring. After all, you can buy a red refrigerator, a coffee machine to match. Or keep it all in yellow colors – the choice is huge.
12. Matte shades and lampshades
Now they are only in hospitals and schools. There, for the sake of design trends, they will not change a good thing, it would be stupid and irrational. But at home, it is better to refuse from translucent glass, similar to frozen jelly (okay, frozen fog). If a matte lampshade is dear to you for dimming the light, exchange it for a dimmer system. Sometimes a bright light is needed.
