Israel has been administering Regeneron to those suffering from the coronavirus, which reduces the risk of a severe course of the disease. Originally, it was only given to patients hospitalized in hospitals and geriatric institutions. At the end of September, the group of eligible persons was expanded. But the Israeli Ministry of Health, fearing excessive demand and excessive generosity on the part of health facilities, introduced specific criteria. Regeneron could be given to the elderly, with chronic diseases, with a rich hospital record, heavy smokers or patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy. You got a point for each factor, and when the number of factors was at least seven, you were eligible to take the drug. The most important factor – worth five points – was the lack of vaccination against COVID-19.
Regeneron, however, turned out to have very little success, especially among the unvaccinated.
– We invest a lot in Regeneron, but we have four times more refusals than those willing. On the one hand, we were surprised. But on the other hand, why would someone who refused vaccination take this drug? At first we thought we would have to ration it. Now we are relaxing the criteria and giving them to willing patients, even if they do not fully meet the criteria, says an official from the Israeli equivalent of the National Health Fund.
Due to the decline in the number of new cases, the Israeli Ministry of Health and the Prime Minister’s Office have decided that from this week, students in cities with a low COVID-19 incidence rate will not have to be quarantined after contact with an infected person. The condition, however, will be a negative PCR test result. In this case, you will be able to go back to school right away, instead of being subject to a weekly quarantine.
- Is the Delta variant more dangerous for children? Scientists explain
Israel, not wanting to close schools, previously introduced a requirement for coronavirus testing among its youngest students. If a virus was found in the classroom, all students had to pass a PCR test. After a negative result, the student went into a weekly quarantine and participated in the lessons remotely. During the quarantine period, his parents receive a free weekly home antigen testing kit. When the result is negative and confirmed by another PCR test (conducted one week after the first), the student will return to class.
