Biography of Isaac Azimova

He is a favorite writer of youth and is considered an American, although he was born on January 2, 1920 in the village. Petrovichi in the Smolensk region. (By the way, American science fiction writer Ray Bradbury was born in the same year).

Parents: Yuda Azimov and his wife Anna-Rakhil Berman were the owners of a small mill. Yuda was well aware that after the revolution, a lot would change, and it was better for their family to emigrate.

In 1922, a girl was born in the family and her parents decided to move to the United States. Anna’s stepbrother lived in New York, he earned good money and, in order to obtain an emigrant visa, provided a guarantee that his relatives “would not be a burden for the country.” He will support them financially. Here Isaac became Isaac.

The story of the Azimov Jewish family is a common story of millions of emigrants who are willing to sacrifice a lot in order to ensure a good life for their children. Yuda Aronovich was lucky, he was glad for his children during his lifetime. Isaac became a famous writer, the other son became a journalist, and his daughter was happily married.

This decision is not easy. In his homeland, Yuda was a successful merchant, an educated person, and was highly respected. On the other side of the ocean, he became a poor man without a cent. He could not speak or read.

But, like all emigrants, he did not disdain any work, and already in 1925 the family was able to make an advance payment for a small bakery, which quickly gained popularity. The children’s future was secured.

Home

From the age of 12, Isaac began to write stories that he read to friends. But he did not even dream that someday these works would be published in huge editions. At the age of 18 he caught the eye of J. “Amazing Science Fiction,” and he wrote a similar story on the subject.

Isaac’s father advised him to pass this story on to editor John Campbell. Isaac knew that the editor rides the subway and once dared to speak to him. Campbell talked with interest with the young man and asked him to bring some of his stories to the editorial office.

The young man was persistent and inspired by faith in his success. Six times the editor returned the manuscript, but Isaac was patient and worked hard. Four months passed and his story was published, and then two more. The way to J. Campbell’s journal was opened for him.

Isaac graduated from Columbia University, and from 1942 to 1945 he worked at the Naval Station in Philadelphia. In 1948 Azimov became a Doctor of Science in Biochemistry. Two years later, he was accepted as a professor of medicine at Boston University.

Isaac Azimov: works

The first novel “A Pebble in the Sky” was published in 1950. In 1968, the publishing house released his 100th book. In total, more than 500 of them were published. Azimov edited several collections of other authors, but most of the works in different genres were written by him.

In 1977, Azimov became the founder of a science fiction magazine that gave young people a chance to try their hand. Sheila Williams became the editor of the magazine. She often recalled the time when a well-known writer came to the editorial office. Fame did not reflect on him, he remained cheerful and attentive.

At the age of 16, Sheila met Isaac at one of the conferences, but could not imagine that she would be the editor of his magazine for 10 years. Isaac, deep down, hoped that the magazine would live a long time and become a memory of him. About three decades have passed since his death, and the magazine is still in demand by readers.

Azimov is rightfully called a writer of the XNUMXth century Renaissance. He wrote books about Shakespeare, the Bible, the history of the United States and the world, books on many areas of science and technology, including astronomy. Azimov was awarded several times with the Hugo and Nebula Prizes.

An ordinary person, to write one of these books, would spend decades of his life studying what it says. A. Azimov’s “Guide to Shakespeare” is used to create performances in all cities of America.
