Is white vaginal mucus a cause for concern? What might the white color of vaginal mucus indicate? Should a doctor be consulted quickly? Could this be a symptom of a developing infection? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
What does white vaginal mucus indicate?
Good day. I have a question about white mucusI’ve noticed recently at home. I am 35 years old, I had a baby two years ago, but since then everything has been fine with my health. Only a few days ago I noticed at home white vaginal mucuswhich I have never noticed at home before. I’ve never had any weird discharge at all until now.
Is white vaginal mucus is it something dangerous? Is this already a reason to see a doctor urgently? Usually I go to the gynecologist at the National Health Fund, so I will have to wait for the date, but I’m a bit afraid that there are some serious causes of white vaginal mucus. I would like to add that the mucus is rather liquid, there are no lumps in it. The only thing that worries me is change the color of the vaginal mucus to white, or actually milky white. Does white vaginal mucus indicate an infection? Or maybe white mucus is a symptom of some disease? Please let me know if I should see a doctor urgently.
The doctor explains the causes of white vaginal mucus
The white color of vaginal mucus does not have to be due to an infectious cause, it is often physiological discharge of the genital tract during ovulation or before menstruation. There is usually no reason to worry about vaginal mucus if it does not smell strongly or unpleasant, and if it is clear or white. Regarding the consistency of physiological mucus, it can be thick and sticky, but also slippery and wet. Thicker mucus may occur during pregnancy, when using hormonal contraception, on the day of ovulation, or before menstruation.
A sign of infection may be a sudden change in smell, color or texture. A fishy smell may indicate a bacterial infection. In turn, dense, lumpy, white may be a symptom of a fungal infection. However, if there is a yellow-green, foamy discharge, itching and symptoms of dysuria (i.e. frequent urination, pain during voiding), this may indicate infection with the pathogen Trichomonas vaginalis. However, if there is pain in the lower abdomen or external (genital organs) – infection with sexually transmitted pathogens.
It is advisable to visit your doctor if there is a change in smell, color and texture, if there is much more discharge than before, if you feel itchy or painful, there is bleeding between periods or after intercourse, pain during micturition or lower abdomen.
To prevent abnormal vaginal discharge, wash the area of the external urogenital organs with water or mild soap, do not use perfumed soaps or other agents, perfumed wipes. Such agents may disturb the acid-base balance of the vaginal environment and make pathogenic pathogens more easily infested than the physiological flora. That is why it is worth eating various types of dairy products that contain Lactobacillus spp bacteria, e.g. cheese, yoghurt, kefir. It is also recommended to take probiotics.
