Could my baby’s wheezing indicate an illness? Could this be a symptom of an incompletely formed airway? What tests should be performed to rule out serious diseases such as asthma? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
Does wheezing indicate serious illness?
Hello, my name is Agata, I am a mother of a 3-year-old Krzys. Unfortunately, I noticed some disturbing symptoms. The son has wheezing. Sometimes when we read a book together and the little one concentrates on the pictures and breathes slowly, I hear him whistle, as if the air could not fully squeeze through some part of his throat. It does not seem to be making breathing difficult. Once, when I heard a whistle, I asked him if he was in pain. Responsibly. Therefore, I have a question. Does a baby’s wheezing always signal that a baby is sick?
I have not noticed that these symptoms worsen. I read on the Internet that it may be because my son’s respiratory tract is not fully formed yet. Is it true? This is my first child. I would not like to neglect anything. I was just thinking that this whistling sound could mean that the child has or will have asthma in the future. It is true that no one in my family or my husband’s family suffered from it. What tests should be done to rule out asthma or other diseases? A doctor I know suggested that a chest X-ray may be needed. Is this also necessary? Greetings Agata and Krzyś.

Your doctor will advise you what wheezing may indicate
Ladies and Gentlemen, wheezing is a non-specific symptom, so various conditions may be responsible for its occurrence. At the very beginning of the diagnosis, it is important to determine whether the wheezing occurs at the time of inhalation or exhalation. Inspiratory wheezes they arise as a result of the narrowing of the airways located outside the chest, and thus primarily the larynx and trachea. Behind inhalation wheezes it may be laryngitis or tracheitis, vocal cord paralysis or the presence of a foreign body in the above-mentioned organs.
In the case of expiratory wheezes, the narrowing affects the airways lying inside the chest, and therefore primarily the bronchi. Medical conditions that may present as expiratory wheezing include, but are not limited to, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chronic bronchitis.
In the case of your son, allergy and bronchial asthma should be ruled out. You and your baby should go to the pediatrician. Basic laboratory tests and possibly a chest X-ray should be performed. Perhaps the symptoms result from an ordinary respiratory infection, and not from a more serious disease, but such symptoms cannot be underestimated. If you suspect bronchial asthma, you and your son will be referred to an allergist or pulmonologist for more detailed tests. As for the question of airway development, wheezing does not occur in healthy children, even at such a young age.
