Is there a lot of salt in the cheese?

We have known for a long time that excess salt in our diet can lead to hypertension. But what can we do when unnecessary salt even permeates our favorite snacks, such as cheese? The latest research by the British health organization Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) has just shown that salt is added in excess even to this product.

According to the British Cheese Board, 98% of British households eat cheese. The most popular is Cheddar (700 tons consumed per year, in sandwiches, salads and noodles). In 2010, Americans ate over 33 pounds of cheese per person, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

The CASH study looked at 772 cheese products – 30 cheese varieties in total. They found that many of them contained more salt than a single pack of crisps – an average of 0.52g per 30g serving. The saltiest cheese there is Roquefort, Feta and Halloumi. The least salty it is Mozzarella, Emmental and Wensleydale. Moreover, considerable variation was found between different brands of the same variety of cheese. For example, one type of Gorgonzola contained 6 times more salt than another. Dr Katharine Jenner, lead of the study, explains: we already know that most cheeses contain a lot of fat. But we often add them to meals without thinking about their salt content. So it’s worth looking at the label and choosing the least salty version of your favorite cheese. Or just add a little less next time. The salty diet is known to be associated with high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. We should remember that the recommended daily amount of salt is less than 6g a day, which is about one teaspoon.
