Should you be concerned about ventricular bigemia? Can this condition be dangerous? What could be the reasons for the emergence of ventricular bigemia? Is the appearance of the disease related to age? Is ventricular bigeminy related to heart problems? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.

Should you be concerned about ventricular bigemia?

Hello. My mother recently had an EKG. Mom is 77 years old and has never had any serious health problems. For some time, however, she began to complain about heart problems, with more effort, it started to beat her very hard. She herself described how she felt as if her heart was about to pop out of her chest. I signed up my mother for the EKG that resulted from it suspicion of ventricular bigeminy. Mom still has to repeat the test, it is possible that she will also wear a recorder.

But now I would like to ask if the ventricular bigeminy is dangerous? I have to say it’s a disease whose name tells me nothing at all and I’m worried if it’s nothing dangerous. What could be the cause of the appearance of coromal bigeminy? Does it have to do with mom’s age? Is this disease related to the fact that mom has had these heart problems recently or is it something completely different? And finally, how to treat ventricular bigemia? Is the procedure performed or does the treatment look different?

The doctor explains what the ventricular bigeminy is

Ventricular bigeminy is visible in the EKG, in which the rhythm is sinus (physiologically formed in the sinus node, which is located in the right atrium), there are two, consecutive, ventricular beats, not single, but “in pairs”.

Such bigemines can also occur in young people. What is important, however, is:

  1. how often they occur,
  2. whether they lead to symptoms
  3. whether there are insertions of any other substitute rhythms, especially during your mother’s heart palpitations.

For this purpose, a Holter EKG is performed, i.e. a 24-hour recording of a 12-lead ECG, which will allow to detect any arrhythmia occurring during the time when we are connected to the device and to count the percentage of bigeminy to the percentage of sinus rhythm and whether it is significant.

Certainly the symptoms presented by your mother are disturbing and require diagnostics and possibly treatment. The only person who can do this is the attending physician. It is always a good idea to find out as much of the family’s medical history as possible before a visit, especially in terms of sudden cardiac deaths and the age at which they occurred or family history of cardiac diseases.

Before visiting a doctor, you should also write down all medications, vitamins or supplements taken, their doses and frequency of taking them. Before the visit, it is also worth writing down the questions that we have to ask the doctor on a piece of paper – when stressed during the visit, many things can escape and to prevent this, it is worth having your questions with you in physical form, not relying on your own memory. A specialist will be happy to answer your every question as best he can.
