According to the researchers, the Delta variant probably does not cause severe disease in children compared to other types of coronavirus. This is the result of the latest, but preliminary findings of scientists. Researchers also observed that convalescents may have stronger immunity to the new coronavirus variants than vaccinated people. However, they note that vaccination is still the best way to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

British researchers at the beginning of the year discovered that the Alpha variant did not cause a more severe course of the infection coronavirus in children. Now their new analyzes have appeared, which suggest that the next variant, i.e. Delta, is not more dangerous for the youngest compared to the Alfa.
Delta variant causes more severe course in children?
The researchers compared two groups of children (school age) infected with the coronavirus:
- 694 children infected with the alpha variant between the end of December 2020 and the beginning of May 2021.
- 706 children infected with the Delta variant between late May and early July
The latter group showed slightly more symptoms of coronavirus infection than the former. However, in both teams studied, very few children required hospitalization. Subjects in all groups were sick for no more than five days, and longer periods of COVID-19 exposure were extremely rare.

– Our data suggests clinical characteristics Delta variants in children are essentially similar to all other forms of COVID-19 – the scientists conclude.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also reached similar conclusions.
Although we see more cases of the Delta variant in children, these studies have shown that it does not cause the more severe symptoms for them. explains the director of the CDC, Dr. Rochelle Walensky.

Healers may have stronger immunity than the vaccinated
Other studies have shown that convalescents largely have stronger immunity to the new coronavirus variants than vaccinated people. However, it is important to know that whether antibodies are produced as a result of an earlier infection or thanks to a vaccine, their levels drop in many people within six months.

Scientists, however, warn. While COVID-19 infection can produce antibodies with a broader activity than the vaccine in the human body, the coronavirus may kill sooner. Vaccination will not do it, therefore it is the best protection against a severe course of the disease or even against death Michel Nussenzweig of the Rockefeller University research leader explains.
