Can you catch psoriasis? Can other people be infected with it? How can disease transmission be prevented? What precautions should I take? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
How contagious is psoriasis?
Hello, I have been struggling with psoriasis for some time. The disease appeared on the elbows, but also on the scalp. But I wonder if psoriasis is contagious? Can it be transferred to other household members? If so, what measures should I take to prevent it? There are four adults in the house. There are no young children. Everyone uses different towels. I am a bit worried about this disease because the doctor informed me that there is no effective cure for it.
The householders look at me as if she was to infect them all, and I feel very bad about it. They look as if I could infect them just by touching them. The disease was a huge surprise for me, but I am trying to deal with it somehow and follow the doctor’s recommendations. Psoriasis, however, is not a pleasant change, and I know appearance alone can be a deterrent. However, I would not like people to treat me like a leper. Please let me know if psoriasis is contagious? And if so, how do you even exist in a society with this disease? Are there any preventive measures to avoid getting infected?
Your doctor explains how you can catch psoriasis
Madam, psoriasis is not a contagious disease, you cannot catch it from another person. Although psoriatic lesions they are reminiscent of infectious lesions, such as fungal lesions, but again, you cannot catch psoriasis. Unfortunately, we still don’t know how exact it is the cause of psoriasis. Genetic and immunological factors are believed to play a major role. Contrary to appearances, psoriasis occurs quite often in our society. It is estimated that about 4% of citizens can suffer from it.
In addition to dark red skin lesions with whitish scales, psoriasis can also affect the nails. Psoriasis lesions most often occur on the elbows, knees and the scalp. However, when it comes to treatment, there are really many drugs used in the treatment of psoriasis. It is not possible to fully cure psoriasis, but you can stop the appearance of changes on the skin. There are local and general treatment. In the case of local treatment, keratolytic preparations such as urea or salicylic acid are used, which reduce the amount of scales formed. In addition to the above-mentioned preparations, glucocorticosteroids are also used (due to their strong anti-inflammatory effect) and vitamin D3 analogues.
As for general treatment, it is reserved for the more severe forms of psoriasis. Drugs with a strong immunosuppressive effect are used, thus weakening the activity of the immune system. These include cyclosporine and methotrexate. I have only presented some of the drugs used, you can get more information from your dermatologist. Please do not worry and inform your family about the non-contagious nature of the disease.
