Should the numbness of the tongue cause anxiety? Should such symptoms be underestimated? What diseases are associated with numbness of the tongue? Should such a symptom be consulted with a doctor? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
Should the numbness of the tongue worry?
Hello, I am 39 years old and sometimes I am language problem. The problem manifests itself sometimes in the form of numbness of the tongue and I have no idea what it might be related to. I don’t suffer from any chronic diseases. I am not complaining of any more serious pains. I have no problems with circulation, neither with the thyroid gland, nor with being overweight. The feeling of numbness comes on suddenly, and so disappears. However, I wonder if the numbness of the tongue is a cause for concern?
Or maybe this is the first symptom of some serious illness, which is better diagnosed in advance than waiting and ignoring it. I would not like to downplay the numbness of the tongue when it could mean something serious. However, I do not know who to report to. The numbness of the tongue does not last long, nor is it painful. It just causes temporary discomfort. When the symptom appeared for the first time it was a big surprise to me, but it passed and I did not consult anyone on it. Now, however, the numbness of the tongue repeats itself, and I don’t know if I should be worried or if the cause is trivial enough to bother the doctor.
Your doctor will advise you on what to do if your tongue becomes numb
Numbness of the tongue, the feeling of “ants” on the tongue are medically called paresthesias. There are many reasons for this symptom.
It can occur as a side effect after dental treatment, e.g. root canal treatment, surgical removal of eights, insertion of dental implants. As a result of the above-mentioned procedures, there may be lingual nerve irritation.
Numbness of the tongue can also be caused by deficiencies in the body’s vitamin B12 stores. Common symptoms include macrocytic anemia (insufficient hemoglobin and blood cells are larger than normal), yellow skin, slower cognition, and symmetrical neuropathy (usually in the lower limbs).
Gastrointestinal disorders such as mouth ulcers, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, malabsorption syndrome * may be added to the symptoms. The neuropsychiatric symptoms that may occur in vitamin B12 deficiency include depressed mood and depression, sleep disorders, cognitive impairment, and dementia.
