Our mothers and grandmothers used to say: “do not sit on the ground or you will catch a wolf.” In autumn and winter, when our bladder starts to ache, we often blame it on a lower temperature, believing that we have caught it. But does cold really affect the bladder and urinary tract diseases? How to treat them and what to avoid so that they do not come back?

  1. “Bladder cold” on frosty days is one of the most popular medical myths. – There is no scientific evidence that the bladder can simply “catch a cold” – explains Dr. Przemysław Dudek, urologist
  2. So why do we feel frequent pressure on the bladder in the cold? – As a result of hypothermia sometimes the detrusor becomes overactive – explains the doctor. It turns out that the matter is much more complicated
  3. What about infections that we are more susceptible to in winter? Medicine also knows the answer to this fact

Przemysław Dudek, MD, PhD

Urology specialist from SCM clinic in Krakow. Deputy Head of the Department of Urology and Urology Oncology at the University Hospital in Krakow

Dr. Dudek explains that there is no direct relationship between cystitis and low temperatures. There is no scientific evidence that the bladder can simply “catch a cold”. Although, he also adds that the cold is not completely indifferent to our bladder!

– There is no such disease entity in medicine as “bladder cold”. We also do not distinguish infections directly related to the autumn and winter period or low temperatures. The cold itself does not cause infection. However, in some cases it may have some effect on the bladder, but indirect. As a result of hypothermia, the detrusor is sometimes overactive. This happens in patients who have bladder neurogenicity, which causes pressure on the bladder. Such people feel the need to urinate more often, e.g. by immersing their limbs in cold water. This is probably because the body which is cooled down causes constriction of the blood vessels and worse leukocyte migration. This, in turn, may interfere with immunity, which does not in itself cause infections, although it is conducive to their development – explains Dr. Przemysław Dudek.

Urinary tract infection – causes

If not cold, what is the main factor in causing cystitis, more specifically urinary tract infection (UTI)? bacteria, viruses i mushroomsand this is indirectly related to sexual activity, improper hygiene and hormonal changes. Bacteria are responsible for the vast majority of such infections, among which the most common is Escherichia coli.

  1. The seven biggest myths about cystitis

This microorganism enters the urinary system through the urethra, where it then multiplies, causing pain and burning when urinating, as well as pollakiuria and a feeling of urgency or incomplete emptying of the bladder, and sometimes also hematuria, fever or nausea.

It is the most common disease of the lower urinary tract, extremely common especially among women, who affect as much as 80%. cases. A woman’s susceptibility to a UTI is determined by the specific anatomy of the female urethra. It is estimated that about half of the women have had this type of infection at least once in their life, of which as much as 25 percent. has relapses. In men, UTIs occur much less frequently, and when it does, each should be treated as a complication, qualifying for antibiotic treatment.

Treatment of UTIs

As Dr. Przemysław Dudek explains, in the treatment of single, uncomplicated episodes of UTI, sometimes it is enough to drink more fluids and symptomatic treatment. This is not the case for recurrent infections. – If urinary tract infections occur at least 3 times a year, it means that we are dealing with a recurrent infection that requires antibiotic treatment. In such cases, I always recommend that patients culture their urine first. Thanks to such a laboratory test, we know which bacteria to target and we can precisely choose the treatment – explains the urologist SCM clinic.

  1. Do you have urinary problems? Order Bladder – a herbal blend that has anti-inflammatory, diuretic and antibacterial properties.

In emergency situations, before we see a doctor, you can use SOS pharmacotherapy, taking simple chemotherapeutic drugs based on furagin for 3-5 days. Women suffering from recurrent urinary tract infections are more and more willing to reach for natural dietary supplements such as cranberry, parsley or blackcurrant juice. It’s good to know, however, that their effectiveness in preventing UTIs has not been scientifically proven. – Rather, it will not hurt us, but it is also uncertain whether it will really help – explains urology specialist Dr. Przemysław Dudek.
