A sheepskin coat, for all its impressiveness and dimensions, is quite delicate clothing that requires special care. This is especially true for options made from natural materials – a number of requirements are put forward for their cleaning and washing.
If you wondered if it is possible to wash a sheepskin coat in a washing machine, we will tell you about the risks of this event. We will also give you practical advice so that you bring your winter clothes in perfect order.
What threatens washing
Many users mindlessly wash in the machine everything that cannot be washed in it, throwing things into the drum indiscriminately. If you value your clothes and don’t want to harm them or your machine, act wisely. Automatic washing for such clothes is categorically not recommended, but to be sure, take a look at the tag – it indicates in 95% of cases that washing is prohibited.
Important! If you think that you can wash such clothes by hand, do not flatter yourself – such washing can lead to no less sad consequences.
Before washing a sheepskin coat in the washing machine, find out what can happen to it after that:
- Materials will suffer, which means that the thing will no longer look so attractive.
- It may not fit in a machine with a load of 5-6 kg. If it does fit, the thing will get wet and become heavier, which will put a huge strain on the CMA parts. If you decide to wash such clothes in auto mode, the load of the machine should be at least 10 kg, while the dry weight of the sheepskin coat should not exceed 5-6 kg.
The best way out in this situation is not washing, but cleaning. It can be dry and wet, and you will learn the intricacies of this process below.
How to clean a sheepskin coat at home
You already know if a sheepskin coat is machine washed – we came to the conclusion that it is better to clean the clothes so as not to expose them and the machine to known risks. If you can’t take your item to a professional dry cleaner, you can also clean your clothes at home.
The most gentle option is dry cleaning, and in this way you can clean both natural and artificial fur coats. Buy a special skin care product and learn how to use it. Our tips will also help you:
- Vacuum the clothes using the special nozzle.
- If the sheepskin coat has a not too old greasy stain, it can be starched or rubbed with talcum powder. The substance is changed several times, after which it is removed from the stain with a regular brush for cleaning clothes.
- You can try to remove other stains in a folk way using semolina. Put on a glove and apply semolina to the stain, then replace with a clean layer of grits. At the end of the process, shake off the grits with a clothes brush or use a damp cloth for this purpose.
You need to be more careful with the fur part of the clothes – the above products will not work, and you can’t wet the fur. You can beat the dust out of the pile or vacuum the inside out. If you decide to clean the top of the product with a wet method, proceed carefully and carefully.
For wet processing, you can use the following mixture:
- 1 part ammonia;
- 1 part water peroxide.
- 1 a glass of water.
Wipe the sheepskin coat with the resulting solution, then wipe off the remnants of the solution with a clean, damp cloth. Dry clothes strictly on a hanger in a well-ventilated room. Do not hang an expensive product to dry in direct sunlight, and do not use heaters, a hair dryer, or a battery.
Machine wash tips
If the temptation to wash a sheepskin coat in a washing machine is too great, you have weighed all the pros and cons and decided to take a risk, then follow our recommendations:
- Do not use dry powders, give preference to liquid gels.
- Set the gentle mode with reduced drum speed, for example, “Delicate”, “Hand wash” or “Voluminous things” will do.
- Choose a temperature regime not higher than 30 degrees.
- Turn off the spin before washing or select only 300-400 drum revolutions.
- Set the extra rinse option.
- Hang clothes to dry, helping to remove excess water with fluffy towels as a last resort.
- Comb the pile after washing so that it does not stick together when drying.
Important! If the item is a little faded after machine washing, use a special spray to restore brightness.
Now you know about all the ways to wash and dry such winter clothes as a sheepskin coat. Once again, we strongly do not recommend using the washer for these purposes. But, if washing is unavoidable, strictly follow all the rules to keep the item tidy.
