Is it possible to “catch a wolf” by sitting in a cold one? We explain

“Do not sit on a stone (concrete), or you will get (catch) a wolf” – this warning has been heard by every child in his life. Can the cold ground under the seat really cause disease? And what does the wolf have to do with all of this?

  1. In tradition, wolves were often associated with something bad, and therefore this animal was credited with the worst
  2. Doctors emphasize that there is no direct link between cystitis and low temperatures
  3. Hemorrhoids can be caused by, inter alia, sedentary lifestyle, lack of fiber and obesity
  4. The root cause of pain is usually the degeneration of the spine

In common understanding, “catch a wolf” is the same as contracting haemorrhoids or perianal lymphatic plexus inflammation. But where did the wolf come from in this saying? This animal is rich in associations – it is a wild, dangerous and dark creature, which is why over time it began to be attributed to the worst ailments. For example – one of the forms of skin tuberculosis that extremely disfigures the human face and, in general, a skin ulcer disease that occurs in humans, or a nasty, persistent ulcer, and – according to the XNUMXth-century Vilnius Dictionary – “displacement in the stool”. What could be behind this saying today? He can be assigned three different meanings.

Cystitis

The first meaning suggests a wolf’s relationship with cystitis. Sitting on cold concrete or stone would lead to local cooling and decreased immunity. Thus, it facilitates the development and multiplication of unwanted microorganisms that lead to inflammation of the bladder and urinary tract. Pregnant women and people with recurrent cystitis should pay attention to their health, including possible hypothermia, as they are more exposed to the devastating effects of cold.

However, as urologist Dr. Przemysław Dudek explains in an interview with Medonet, there is no direct link between cystitis and low temperatures. There is no scientific evidence that the bladder can simply “catch a cold”. However, the cold is not completely indifferent to our bladder. – Cold itself does not cause infections. However, in some cases it may have some effect on the bladder, but indirect. As a result of hypothermia, the detrusor is sometimes overactive. This happens in patients with bladder neurogenicity, which causes pressure on the bladder, explains Dr. Dudek.

«Wolf» and hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids, also known as haemorrhoids, can have many causes. An inflammation in the anus is associated with this condition, causing bleeding, blood in the stools, burning sensation and pain during bowel movements.. According to the saying, it would be the effect of cooling down the buttocks. However, it is not so. The most common causes of this disease include:

  1. frequent constipation,
  2. diarrhea
  3. defecation rhythm disturbances,
  4. sedentary lifestyle,
  5. obesity,
  6. lack of physical activity,
  7. low dietary fiber content,
  8. pregnancy.

Roots from the cold

The last disease associated with the “wolf” is radiculitis. It is quite unpleasant and intense pain in the sacral area of the spine, caused by increased muscle tension. It can sometimes take the form of sciatica. Often the tension is so intense that it makes it difficult or almost impossible to function normally.

Its appearance requires medical consultation. Pain is caused by the mechanical pressure of the damaged intervertebral disc (disc) on the nerve roots. It is usually caused by degenerative changes in the spine progressing with age. So on this point, the myth of “catching a wolf” by sitting on a cold one is also untrue.
