Is it dangerous or not? The doctor told what needs to be considered when planning pregnancy in the era of COVID-19

In the current epidemiological situation, the correct preparation and management of the pregnancy itself is especially important. Therefore, doctors are advised to listen to certain rules.

Pregnancy is a special time full of all kinds of excitement and long expectations. But the current situation with the spread of coronavirus infection can seriously overshadow an already troubling (but still happy) time for expectant mothers.

It is reported that the last year broke the record for the birth rate – the lowest in the last 8 years. Among the reasons, doctors single out the sudden outbreak of a pandemic, which still raises a lot of fears among young families planning to replenish. However, doctors reassure: the number of complications among pregnant women is extremely small, and the danger of the virus to the fetus has not been proven at all. And to reassure all girls who want to get pregnant in these times, experts have compiled a list of a number of guidelines.

So, doctors advise starting preparation no later than 3-6 months before conception. It is necessary to undergo a mandatory complete examination to determine your health status. In the event that there are any problems or complications, then therapy is prescribed that contributes to a favorable gestation and childbirth.

“The first steps will be a face-to-face visit to a doctor, anamnesis collection and a gynecological examination. Based on the results of the first visit, the doctor can prescribe laboratory and other tests, with a second visit, he gives recommendations on preparing for conception. In most cases, pregravid training ends there, ”says Irina Zakaryan, obstetrician-gynecologist of the Federal Research Center for Medical and Biological Sciences of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia.

In addition, it is worth taking seriously the observance of all currently generally accepted coronavirus restrictions. Most doctors are still arguing about the possibility of infection of the fetus in late pregnancy. Most experts believe that a child cannot become infected in the womb, and the virus itself is able to enter the body of a newborn by airborne droplets after it is born.

Even despite studies proving the absence of significant threats of coronavirus for children under 1 year old, according to statistics, one in five children infected with COVID-19 received a life-threatening complication of the heart muscles. In this regard, obstetricians are asked to discuss compliance with all necessary quarantine measures during the consultation.

“In a pandemic, it is a wise decision to choose a place and an obstetrician in advance, to find out in which clinics there are restrictions on accompanying loved ones during childbirth and the joint stay of the mother and child. Some women, in order to reduce social contacts, choose home birth, however, in the current epidemiological situation it is unsafe for the child, ”the gynecologist shares.

Also, doctors advise to take a number of preventive measures to combat increased anxiety and minimize the amount of stress. To do this, it would not be superfluous to use the services of competent certified experts who specialize in the difficult problems associated with upcoming motherhood – nutritionists, psychologists, immunologists. Fortunately, all classes and consultations can now be done online at home.
