A publication presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2012 shows that the risk of undiagnosed hypertension in young people is 28% higher than in the elderly. It’s important to understand how many young people are unaware that they have high blood pressure because we know that diagnosing the condition and treating it properly can help people control it, said Medical Doctor Heather Johnson, professor of medicine in cardiology University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

The study included 13,539 people over the age of 18 who had visited a doctor twice or more in the last three years. They all had relatively high pressure, allowing to talk about the diagnosis of hypertension. After four years, it turned out that 67% of 18-24 year olds had not been properly diagnosed, while 60% of those aged over 54 had not been diagnosed. Additionally, 65% of people aged 25-31 and 59% from 32 to 39 years of age have not been diagnosed with hypertension.
