Is hip pain in pregnancy a cause for concern?

Good day. Ania here, I’m 23 years old. I am currently in the third trimester of pregnancy. Everything would be fine if it weren’t for the fact that my hip was starting to hurt. For the first time in my life I feel this kind of pain that can be unbearable. It is worst in the evening. Sometimes I go to bed around 22 PM and stay awake for even 3 hours. When my hip is tearing, I don’t even have the strength to go to the bathroom. All movement is then one great nightmare. In such situations, my husband and my brother help me to the toilet until I feel paralyzed.

Thank God the pain stops after a while and I can function normally again. I have a question in this regard. Is hip pain serious during pregnancy? We are planning a natural birth with my husband and I cannot imagine that if the baby was born in the evening, I would have to struggle with hip pain – I do not know how I would have endured it! Should I be afraid of something? Is presence hip pain in pregnancy is a sign to decide on a cesarean after all? Can a sore hip somehow endanger a baby? Regards Ania from Szczytno.

The doctor explains what hip pain in pregnancy may mean

Dear Mrs. Anna, pain in the hips or pelvis is quite common in pregnant women. Depending on the trimester of pregnancy, it may have a different etiology. If the pain occurs at the beginning of pregnancy, it most likely has nothing to do with it. If the pain appeared only in advanced pregnancy, it is most likely due to its presence. In the third trimester of pregnancy, a hormone called relaxin is activated, which causes the ligaments and joints of the pelvis to relax to help the baby pass through the birth canal.

Unfortunately, apart from such an important function it performs, it can lead to pain as a result of excessive relaxation of the aforementioned structures. Of course, the perceived pain may also result from such a prosaic reason as the extra pounds that the osteoarticular system has to bear. In the last weeks of pregnancy, the woman’s body prepares for the birth of a child by moving the fetus lower and lower towards the pelvic cavity. In this situation, it is normal for a woman to feel pain or pressure not only around the hips or pelvis but also in the lower abdomen. I would also like to warn you that the symptoms you mentioned do not have to be related to pregnancy, even at such an advanced stage. Sciatica should also be excluded.

I recommend that you consult a gynecologist who will prescribe painkillers that are suitable for pregnant women. As for a physiological birth, you do not have to give birth to you in pain, there are various methods of pain relief, including epidural anesthesia. I suggest asking the gynecologist for details.

The editorial board recommends:

  1. Where does itchy skin in the evening come from?
  2. What does palate pain mean?
  3. What are endocervical cells?
