Should you be concerned about an increased CRP in a newborn? Why might my baby develop high CRP? Does this indicate an infection is developing? Should the results be consulted with a doctor and treatment initiated? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
Is elevated CRP in the newborn a cause for concern?
Hello, I am a mother of a newborn baby. We’ve been doing some research recently and everything turned out fine, however, one result worries me, namely elevated CRP — CRP score was 45 and I know that CRP norms in newborns they are much lower, which worries me a lot. Is elevated CRP in a newborn dangerous? There is no indication that the child is sick, but I don’t think so high CRP in a newborn was something normal. I am very worried because there is no fever, but I am afraid that the cause may be some more serious illness.
Could I please clarify causes of high CRP in newborns? Is such an elevated CRP definitely some infection, or maybe something more serious that requires a quick visit to the doctor and implementation of treatment? Of course, we have an appointment with our doctor, but due to the fact that nothing bad happened, the visit is only a few days away, meanwhile I got my results with high CRP today and I am wondering whether I should rush this visit. Is a high CRP in a newborn baby dangerous?
A doctor explains the causes of high CRP in a newborn
CRP – C-reactive protein is an acute phase protein that increases in inflammation. It is produced in the liver and in the arterial wall under the influence of inflammatory factors. Determination of CRP in blood is a commonly performed test. It allows you to confirm the suspicion of inflammation, to evaluate the effectiveness of current treatment, and to assess the cardiovascular risk. Normal values are within the range of 0,08–3,1 mg / l. The synthesis and secretion of CRP is highly dynamic. CRP levels can increase significantly during the day. It is important how much CRP is in your blood.
The reasons for increasing CRP are primarily various types of viral, bacterial, parasitic and fungal infections. When the infection is resolved, the CRP level drops. That is why the test is used in monitoring the course of infectious diseases.
Increase in CRP after some time, it indicates the development of the disease, which requires continuation or modification of treatment. CRP level sometimes it allows the decision to start an antibiotic before the result of bacteriological culture. In addition to infections, high CRP can be observed, among others in systemic diseases of connective tissue, gastrointestinal diseases or cancer.
A slight increase in CRP is seen in babies after birth. The cause of an infection in a newborn baby may be perinatal complications or the mother’s disease during pregnancy. CRP is a non-specific marker of the severity of inflammation and does not indicate the presence of a particular disease. The results of laboratory tests should be compared with the clinical picture. In doubtful cases, tests are performed again. I suggest visiting a pediatrician.
It is worth having the child examined by a doctor. Infections in newborns develop dynamically. After reviewing the patient, the doctor will decide on further treatment. Depending on the clinical picture, he will order the necessary tests and implement appropriate treatment.
