Cervical cancer, unlike other genital cancers, is not hereditary. Since there is no genetic predisposition to develop cervical cancer, its formation depends only on environmental risk factors that can be protected against. The main factor causing cervical cancer (as much as 99,8%) is persistent HPV infection. Preventing HPV infections is the best way to reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Therefore, vaccinations against oncogenic strains of the virus are recommended. However, they do not exempt from regular Pap smear tests.
