Can an adult get infected with Boston from a child? Is the development of the disease possible in an adult? What could be the causes of the rash and malaise? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

Can an adult get infected with Boston?

Hello. I am 28 years old and have been taking an antibiotic for a few days because my throat was very sore, I felt weak, I feel generally unwell, I am weakened and generally broken. After some time, these symptoms were joined by nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and the doctor decided to include an antibiotic in the treatment.

A few days after the first ailments on the hands and feet appeared pimples that reminded me of smallpox because they are raised, some show serous fluid. My niece has a Boston, is it possible that I got infected from her? Whether Boston in adults is possible? I think this disease is infectious disease in young childrencould I get infected?

I don’t know whether to go to the doctor now or wait for the pimples to subside. I would like to add that before the symptoms started, I had a very high fever (even 39 degrees) for a few days, none of them worked antipyretic drugs. I am asking for an answer, because I do not know what to do, and the pustules, unfortunately, hinder my daily functioning, my feet hurt.

The doctor explains if an adult can catch Boston

Ladies and Gentlemen, of course hand, foot and mouth disease – we are talking about this disease, Boston is an incorrect term – it is possible in adults. Although it is much less common than in children, cases of the disease also appear in adults.

Characteristic of this disease is the appearance of papular or vesicular rash on the hands, feet and oral mucosa, accompanied by high fever. The etiological factors of the disease are viruses, primarily Coxsackie viruses, not bacteria, therefore an antibiotic will not help to cure it.

Infection occurs through direct contact with secretions or excreta (the virus is also found in the stool), so it is very possible that you got infected from your niece. As it is a viral disease, treatment is only symptomatic. As mentioned above, antibiotics are not used as they are only antibacterial and not antiviral.

I mainly use antipyretic drugs, in particular paracetamol, ibuprofen and metamizole, antiallergic drugs, including desloratadine and cetirizine, as well as antipruritic drugs. Among the antipruritic drugs, hydroxyzine is invaluable. It is also an antiallergic drug, but with a strong anti-itching effect. Unfortunately, it causes drowsiness and interferes with driving.

Of course, it goes without saying that you definitely have hand, foot, and mouth disease. Such a diagnosis can only be made by a doctor after proper examination of the patient. It is always advisable to have additional laboratory tests, including a complete blood count with a smear and CRP. I suggest that you visit your family doctor for further diagnosis of your condition.
