PSYchology

Iris Johansson writes about herself and her childhood — about the world of a child with autism

Born and raised in a Swedish village, Iris has always found it difficult to communicate with other people. But the girl’s father figured out how to «include» her in life. He put his daughter in a backpack and carried him all day long, doing his usual work in the barnyard and explaining to Iris his every action. Father was sure that Iris could learn everything that ordinary children can, just more slowly. As a result, Iris was able to finish school and became a psychologist. Her description and analysis of the inner world of a person who was completely excluded from the connections familiar to each of us, but gradually learned to speak and communicate, makes it possible to rethink such simple things as closeness, contact with other people, to feel how subjective the reality in which we are we live.
