The history of the city is formed not only from the history of its streets, squares and biographies of eminent citizens, but also from the facts of everyday life.

The history of the city is made up not only of the history of its streets, squares and biographies of eminent citizens, but also of the facts of everyday life. It is this everyday aspect of the history of Moscow that is devoted to the book by Irina Kulakova, which depicts the appearance of Muscovites’ housing from the smoking huts of the times of Ivan the Terrible and up to the current elite new buildings. The mansions of the rich and the rooming houses of the poor, the first typical layouts and the “communal era”, the small-sized revolution and the luxury of the “Luzhkov style” — the author interprets all stages of the development of Moscow construction from a pragmatic point of view, focusing the reader’s attention not on the architectural features of certain buildings, but on their «living», human content.
