iPhone 14 (2022): release date and specifications

Apple smartphones are traditionally updated every year. Some versions can be called revolutionary in terms of design (rejection of the Home button in the iPhone X) or technical part (the appearance of NFC in the iPhone SE), but some are not. 

According to the schedule of previous years, the official presentation of the iPhone 2022 14 is waiting for us in the fall of 2022. The first abrupt information about the smartphone is available now. KP has collected in one material everything that is known to the new brainchild of Apple at the moment.

Release date iPhone 14 (2022) in Our Country and in the world

The device will go on sale only after the official autumn presentation. They usually take place in September or October. Accordingly, in these numbers, future buyers will be presented with the appearance of the smartphone. After a couple of days, the phones will already go on sale in official Apple stores. Our forecast for the release date of the iPhone 14 in Our Country and in the world is early October 2022. But according to some reports, smartphone sales may begin on the day of the presentation, presumably September 13¹.

Our theory is confirmed by the forecast of Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman – according to his version, it is in the fall of 2022 that Apple will show the bulk of new devices, including the new iPhone 14². Less interesting to the general public, the iPhone SE 3 is planned to be demonstrated this spring.

Of course, in a few days after the presentation, smartphones will definitely appear on the shelves of all major countries. However, those who are especially impatient can purchase a smartphone through an intermediary in the United States and get it one of the first in the country.

The price of the iPhone 14 (2022) in Our Country

A real surprise awaits everyone here. Insider Ming Chi Kuo hinted at a decrease in the retail price of the new iPhone 2021 14 in the summer of 2022. According to his forecasts, the most advanced version of the iPhone 14 Pro Max will cost less than $ 900³ (iPhone 12 Pro Max price is $1100). It is logical to assume that the cost of models without Pro and Pro Max additions will also decrease by $100-200. 

Thus, the price of the iPhone 14 2022 in Our Country, according to our forecasts, will be from 70 to 100 thousand rubles, depending on the model, if there are no sharp jumps in the ruble exchange rate.

But there is also an opposite version of the development of events. According to the Econotimes portal, the price of new iPhone 2022 may increase by a decent $100. This will happen allegedly due to Apple’s refusal from the iPhone 14 Mini and the rise in production costs. Thus, the most affordable iPhone 14 in the US can be bought for at least $799.⁴.

Apple’s latest data leaks suggest that the iPhone 14 will start at $800 for the base model, while the Max will cost $900. The flagship iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will cost $1100 and $1200 respectively⁵.

It should be borne in mind that the total cost of the iPhone 14 in Our Country may increase due to the conditions of parallel imports.

According to the same Ming Chi Kuo, the iPhone 14 line will not have a mini model with a screen diagonal of 5,1 inches. Apple will stop at four models with two display sizes – 6,1 and 6,7 inches. 

The rest of the insiders and journalists also continue to bury the model with the prefix -mini⁶. This is logical, given the small smartphone sales statistics cited by Counterpoint Research. So, in China, the iPhone 13 mini accounts for only 5% of the total number of phones sold by Apple. Basic models are chosen in 50% of iPhone purchases⁷. By the way, analyst Ming Chi Kuo is sure that in 2022 Apple will experience unprecedented sales of the iPhone 14 in China. Local retailers left far more pre-orders for the novelty than in the case of the iPhone 13 in 2021⁸.

Let’s call the new phones iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The last two copies will be considered flagship. This is confirmed by recent information from analyst Mark Gurman⁹. In more expensive models, they will set always on display (the screen is highlighted even during lockdown) and share the “bangs” with the selfie camera and faceID.

Processor

All models will be equipped with the most advanced processor for smartphones at the time of release – A16 Bionic. The core is made on a 4mm process technology, which means that its performance and energy efficiency will be greater than that of models from previous years. Of course, the iPhone 14 will support 5G networks.

The new, powerful and at the same time more compact chip in the iPhone 14 is needed not only for synthetic tests and beautiful presentations. Performance directly affects the work of the system’s self-learning algorithms, and the use of a smaller technical process depends on the operating time of the smartphone. The new A16 processor will allow up to 14 GB of RAM in the iPhone 8 Pro and Pro Max, instead of 6 GB in the iPhone 13.

It is possible that the A16 Bionic will be cooled by an evaporative system similar to the one used in gaming smartphones from Razer¹⁰.

However, among bloggers and insiders there is an alternative opinion about the processor of the future iPhone 14. So, Mark Gurman suggests that the base models of the iPhone 14 will work on last year’s Bionic A15¹¹. The fact is that in less than two years, Apple presented to the public five versions of the M-series processors for laptops at once. Therefore, it is likely that the American company has redirected human and technical resources from the production of Bionic-series processors for smartphones to chips for laptops.

By the way, in early July, information appeared on the network that Apple in the first wave of iPhone 14 production would reduce the total number of smartphones released by 10%. This happens due to a lack of processors – manufacturers from Taiwan allegedly cannot provide Apple with the required number of semiconductors.¹².

Display

As already mentioned, the iPhone 14 will be presented with two display sizes. In the top versions of the smartphone, the black “bangs” will completely disappear. At the top of the display of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, only a small peephole of the front camera will remain¹³. 

In January 2022, information appeared that in more expensive versions of the iPhone, the set of sensors could move away from the top edge of the screen and turn into a separate small window with rounded edges.¹⁴. A similar system was used in the Galaxy S10 series. With it, the screen really starts to look bigger.

It is likely that due to the lack of additional sensors in place of the “bangs”, the American company will have to completely abandon FaceID and come up with an alternative with a fingerprint scanner right on the screen.

In other parameters, the display, apparently, will not differ much from the LTPO screen of the iPhone 13 with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. By the way, in some renders of the iPhone 14, designers stubbornly draw him a second screen on the back of the case. It is not as big as in Yotaphone and contains only a few lines of notifications. It looks, of course, impressive, but it is weak to believe in such miracles.

Insiders say that the two flagship iPhone 14 will feature Always On Display¹⁵. With it, the smartphone screen is slightly highlighted even when locked, and you can see some information on it. This is also confirmed by the fact that in the presentation of iOS 16 at WWDC 2022, they announced the possibility of a mobile system working with such displays. Most likely, some basic information will always be displayed on the display of a locked iPhone 14. For example, clocks or other simple widgets that do not require constant animation.

Information about the use of ProMotion technology in the displays of all iPhone 14 models has not yet been confirmed. With this technology, the smartphone automatically changes the screen refresh rate depending on the task. For example, when viewing static pictures, it drops, while in dynamic games, on the contrary, it increases. 

In addition to smooth movements on the screen, this feature saves smartphone battery consumption. Insiders say that ProMotion will still remain only in more expensive models of Apple technology (as it was with the iPhone 13 Pro / Pro Max and iPad Pro)¹⁶.

Chassis

One of the main changes to the iPhone 14 case, along with the “bangs” revolution, is called the possible rejection of the Lightning connector on the network.¹⁷. In 2012, such a seemingly small update changed the generally accepted standard – now it was not necessary to turn the connector over before charging. The ideal solution would be to leave the body of the novelty without any connectors at all, which can get water or dirt, modern wireless chargers work great. But an alternative is possible in the form of a MagSafe connector, which Apple unexpectedly remembered in its latest versions of the MacBook.

The latest Apple devices are gradually returning to the “flat” design in the style of the iPhone 4. The latest smartphones will also be no exception. Judging by the numerous renders, the iPhone 14 is worth waiting for the sharp edges of the phone case and even thinner bezels around the screen.

The thickness of the case, especially in the area of ​​the cameras, can increase again due to the use of more advanced optics. It also cannot be ruled out that Apple will start making its more expensive smartphones from titanium, and not from aircraft-grade aluminum – the corresponding patent was registered in 2021.¹⁸. Body colors, as in the case of last year’s model, promises to be many.

Camera

According to analyst Ming Chi Kuo, in 2022 we will have a major update to the iPhone 14 cameras. This is quite logical, because in the 2021 lineup the upgrade ended with the appearance of optical stabilization.

Apple has never chased the number of megapixels in iPhone cameras, limiting itself to a modest 12 MP main module. However, until 2021, this, coupled with a large matrix and a post-processing system, was enough to create high-quality images. In the 2022 model, the number of megapixels is promised to be increased to 48 – at least in the Pro and Pro Max models. Ming Chi Kuo is confident that this will take mobile photography to a whole new level.¹⁹. The network has photos of the “blanks” of the new smartphone for accessories manufacturers. By their appearance, it is clear that the diagonal of the camera lenses will increase in the iPhone 14 – at least in the flagship Pro and Pro Max models.²⁰.

The exact characteristics of the cameras are still unknown, but the set of main optics itself will remain the same – the main lens, ultra-wide angle (in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max). The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will add a telephoto lens and a lidar sensor. It is also worth noting that the front camera of the smartphone has not been updated since the release of the iPhone 11 in 2019, it is possible that by the end of 2022 Apple will decide on some changes in the technical part of the selfie optics.

Insider Jon Prosser, citing his own source, assures that the protruding part of the camera will finally disappear in the iPhone 14. Apparently, Apple somehow miraculously managed to hide all the optical sensors in the body of the smartphone itself.²¹.

Communications

With the advent of 5G support in the iPhone 13, you should not wait for some drastic changes in the communication system of the iPhone series for a long time. The smartphone will most likely have Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC.

The only new feature may be support for satellite communications, which for some reason may not appear in the iPhone 13²². Analyst Ming Chi Kuo said in a note to investors that such technology would allow a smartphone to make calls or send SMS in places where there is no connection at all. 

The technology will work through artificial earth satellites that operate in low Earth orbit (from 160 to 2000 km). It is assumed that Apple users will use this feature only in critical situations when there is no access to cellular communications through base stations.

It is noteworthy that Apple is going to use a completely new Snapdragon X14 2022G modem in the iPhone 5 65²³. This is the first chip that, under ideal conditions, will allow overclocking the speed of mobile Internet to 10 gigabits per second. Right now, such technologies are frankly redundant, but in the future, 5G development around the world looks adequate. Users will hardly notice a change in the speed of downloading videos or games – it is very high even with today’s chips. A new Apple modem is needed for system operation and computing on remote servers.

Battery

Insider ShrimpApplePro shared information about the battery capacity of all iPhone 14 models, but warned that this is preliminary data²⁴.

So, the base models of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max received batteries of 3279 and 4325 mAh. The flagship iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone Pro Max will install batteries with a capacity of 3200 and 4323 mAh, respectively. What major changes compared to the iPhone 13 did not happen here.
