International Porridge Day
 

October becomes the month of each year International Porridge Day (World Porridge Day). A traditional dish of Russian cuisine, like the cuisines of many nations of the world, has continued to be popular for over a thousand years.

This is what caused the appearance of this wonderful holiday. It does not have an official status, and the date of its holding on the Internet is indicated differently – October 10 or 11. One way or another, but October united all lovers of porridge – a traditional dish of many nations. In the culture of the Russian people, in its culinary traditions, porridge occupies a special place. The saying “Cabbage soup, but porridge is our food” is not accidental.

It is believed that the holiday originated in Great Britain, where the tradition of cooking and eating oatmeal is still strong. There is information that it was first held in 2009 with the charitable purpose of helping a center helping starving children in poor countries. It was porridge, a product based on the preparation of cereals of one or another cereal crop, that was chosen by Mary`s Meals center as a dish to which the holiday was dedicated. It is porridge, or rather the cereal from which it is cooked, that is one of the simplest and most common dishes growing in various parts of the world. Somewhere porridge is simply the basis of the diet. Thus, she is able to prevent the threat of hunger.

The ability to cook porridge from a wide variety of cereals and vegetables, the growing zones of which, in turn, vary from north to south, has made porridge perhaps the most famous dish in the world. It is prepared from such cereals as: oatmeal, buckwheat, pearl barley, rice, barley, millet, semolina, wheat, corn. The predominance of one or another porridge in the diet of various peoples is associated with what cereal crops grew in the territory of the people. Over time, a whole tradition of cooking porridge has developed in the culture of different peoples, and certain preferences have been formed.

 

Various events are held in honor of Porridge Day in different countries. So, in Great Britain there is a porridge cooking championship (founded long before the establishment of the holiday). In other countries, quizzes, master classes on cooking porridge, contests, competitions in cooking or eating porridge are held. Many restaurants and cafes include in the menu and offer their visitors a variety of cereals on this day.

Do not forget that many cereals, being tasty, nutritious food, make up the diet of dietary and baby food. For children, porridge becomes one of those dishes from which the child begins to get acquainted with food in general.

Many events dedicated to the International Porridge Day are charitable in nature, and the funds raised from them are directed to funds to help starving children and fight hunger.
