Mountain peaks – just two words, but how many images are behind them. Mountains for everyone. For some, these are snowy peaks shining in the sun. Someone imagines endless emerald peaks, bewitching with their beauty. Someone – sheer cliffs, dangerous and attractive.
When is International Mountain Day 2022?
International Mountain Day, as the name implies, is an international holiday and is important for every state. He is noted 11 December, 2022 will not be an exception – the date of the celebration is constant.
history of the holiday
International Mountain Day was established by a General Assembly resolution in 2003.
The purpose of this day is not to congratulate all those “involved”, but to preserve the natural wealth of the world, support the indigenous inhabitants of mountainous areas, and raise people’s awareness of the problems and importance of mountain ranges. Most of the celebrations are held in the UN member countries.
Purpose of the holiday
According to the UN, about 15% of all mankind lives in the mountains. About 50% of all biodiversity is located there. Approximately half of humanity depends on the various resources that mountains provide us. The more dangerous climate change, land degradation and any other negative changes in these areas become.
Climate change has the greatest impact on rocks. Already, many people began to feel the lack of water and food. Melting snow peaks lead to avalanches, landslides and flooding of valleys. One in three mountain dwellers feel at risk of food insecurity.
There are, however, also positive moments. Do not forget that the mountainous terrain is unique, isolated corners create a unique climate that helps to develop a variety of life forms. The inaccessibility of many mountainous areas allows the creation and maintenance of endemic species found in only one part of the planet. For example, in Pakistan, unique breeds of cattle are common, which are more resistant to disease than their “brothers”. And this difference helps animals better adapt to climate change. About 70% of mountain areas are used for grazing, which provides manure and fertilizes the soil, which helps to increase its fertility. But in addition to meat and milk, animals also provide butter, wool and other products.
The wide variety of ecosystems, species and genetic resources make mountains unique. Not only for travel and “admiring”, but also for life. Therefore, intentional sabotage negatively affects all the inhabitants of the planet.
Holiday traditions
On December 11, it is customary to arrange lectures, fairs, seminars, master classes and other educational events.
This day is dedicated to awareness of the problems and needs of the mountains.
A tradition for any of us can become a careful attitude to nature. Best of all, your own experience and “eye” will tell about these age-old giants, but books and films will be an excellent alternative.
