When is Dentist Day celebrated in Our Country and the world

International Dentist Day 2023 is celebrated February 9. It appeared in Our Country recently, but is considered one of the most important holidays for dental specialists and their grateful patients.

History

Dentistry is a very ancient profession. More than 14000 years old teeth were found in a Pakistani province, with traces of their treatment and drilling.

Initially, shamans were engaged in dental treatment. Medicinal herbs and spells were used for this. In ancient Egypt, this profession was common and in demand. It was the Egyptians who invented the first toothpaste. It consisted of shells, ashes and pumice. The very first toothbrush was a wooden stick, pounded at the end. According to the mummies found, we can judge the achievements of those times in the field of dentistry. Even then, they knew how to drill teeth, fasten fallen teeth with gold wire, use herbs in the treatment of dental diseases and as part of fillings.

Pierre Fauchard can be considered the founder of modern dentistry, who wrote many works on this topic. He offered to put gold crowns and cover the teeth with porcelain in the color of real ones. He has many brilliant inventions to his credit. He came up with plates to align the teeth, a certain system of lenses, with the help of which light penetrated better into the patient’s oral cavity for more comfortable work. Thanks to him, the first dental schools began to open.

In Our Country, the development of dentistry began under Peter I. He himself studied this profession while in Europe, and practiced his skills on the courtiers. In 1710 he introduced the official title of “dentist”. Starting from the 19th century, it was allowed to engage in dental work only after graduating from the medical academy and successfully passing all the exams.

Now dentistry has reached an incredible development, thanks to which you can forget about the pain and fear when visiting the dentist, while getting a gorgeous smile and healthy teeth.

As for the date of the holiday, it was chosen in memory of the Christian martyr Apollonia. With the help of cruel torture, she was forced to renounce Christianity. She withstood all the tortures, and after being threatened with burning at the stake, she herself stepped into the fire. Later she was called the patron saint of dentists. There is a belief that if you say “Saint Apollonia”, the toothache goes away.

Traditions
