Intermediate option: Pre-5G option appeared in our country

As part of the new tariff formation model, MegaFon offers Russian subscribers the Pre-5G option — it adds 30% to Internet speed

What’s going on

  • MegaFon offered its customers a 30% increase in Internet speed thanks to Pre-5G technology, the company told Trends. This option is included for free in the three maximum content tariff plans – Maximum, VIP and Premium. The consumption model at these tariffs is different – subscribers are more likely to download heavy content or use streaming services that require maximum speed. Subscribers of other tariffs will be able to connect Pre-5G for ₽399 per month.
  • The company was the first among Russian telecom operators to offer a new tariff formation model: in the updated line, tariff plans differ not only in the volume of included minutes, SMS and traffic, but also in the speed of mobile Internet.
  • Since LTE technology (aka 4G) is sufficient to cover the basic needs of subscribers in the mobile Internet, Pre-5G is presented as a separate option – this will allow subscribers to reasonably approach spending, and the operator, using the frequency resource wisely, respond to subscribers’ requests.
  • The company’s specialists were able to offer increased speed to users of the Pre-5G option by updating the traffic management service model. The complex use of advanced technologies such as SON (Self-Organizing Network), DRX (Discontinuous Reception), RCAF (RAN Congestion Awareness Function), as well as VoLTE and VoWiFi allows you to effectively manage network load and frequency resource.
  • The company notes that competent traffic management makes it possible to additionally speed up the Internet for those who really need it.

What does it mean

MegaFon offers its subscribers the fastest mobile Internet in our country and has maintained its leadership in this parameter for five years. This is confirmed annually by Ookla’s research based on the results of speed measurements by Russian users in the Speedtest application. The average download speed in the MegaFon network reaches 32,92 Mbps versus 21,7 Mbps for the nearest competitor. Now MegaFon has proposed a new approach to tariff setting in the Russian market. So far, speed differentiation has only been used in fixed communications.

The rapid development of technology does not bypass mobile networks – despite the fact that fast 4G networks cover the basic needs of subscribers, the world is looking forward to the introduction of fifth generation networks, and some companies are already testing wireless data transmission in 6G.

The availability of 5G networks in Russian million-plus cities, according to preliminary estimates, should be provided in 2024. However, what should users do who already need a higher Internet speed? In this situation, the Pre-5G option comes to the rescue.
