Interleaving: how to learn twice as fast

We tend to think that repeating an action over and over again is the best way to master a skill. Entrepreneur Elle Kaplan talks about how you can optimize your workouts using the interleaving method.

The essence of the method is that several skills are taught at the same time. For example, instead of learning to play one banjo string, you master all the strings. In the process of learning, you focus on the information you receive, and as a result, it is stored in long-term memory. In traditional learning (method of repetition), short-term memory is included. Therefore, everything learned for exams is quickly forgotten after passing.

Below are some practical tips for using interleaving to help make the learning process effective.

Train multiple skills at the same time

The method was tested in baseball team training. The first group trained in the traditional way, bringing to automatism first one, then the second and subsequent techniques. The second group alternated practicing different strikes. After six weeks, the first group progressed by 24,8%, while the second group improved by 56,7%.

Interleaving is effective during the examination period, as it allows you to remember the studied material for a long time.

Interleaving contributes not only to more effective mastery of skills, but also to responsiveness and flexibility. The difference can be represented by the example of boxers, the first of which is practicing one punch, and the second is training in sparring, that is, ready for various fight options.

Plan your classes ahead of time

The correct organization of the learning process is important. Think in advance what skills you intend to train so that learning happens at a fast pace, without interruptions to think about what to do next. Are you going to pay attention to training your leg muscles? Make a list of relevant exercises with the number of reps and sets.

Get back to basics

When you work on a new skill, the old ones weaken and are forgotten. Returning to the past is one of the features of the method. This approach improves brain function and trains long-term memory. An added benefit of repetition is the rest the brain gets. He needs a break from time to time. In general, regular repetition contributes to long-term memorization of elements of physical and intellectual activity.

The interleaving method allows you to remember the material for a long time. Vince Dooley, football coach at the University of Georgia, uses it successfully in the training process.

Keep track of achievements

If you find that interleaving isn’t producing results as quickly as the traditional technique, you’re not alone. 80% of students believe that the traditional style helps them study better during the semester. But during the examination period, it turns out that this method is effective, as it allows you to remember the studied material for a long time.

Get out of your comfort zone

The traditional method of teaching with repetitive tasks makes it possible to study calmly. Interleaving with its intensity and variety of exercises, tasks and skills is not very comfortable. It is not always easy to successfully complete the task the first time, sometimes failures and a step back are possible, but such training is more effective and teaches mindfulness.
