Interior design of a small kitchen: before and after photos

A narrow pencil case with an area of eight square meters is quite “livable”. It can fit all the necessary kitchen furniture, appliances, a dining group and even a sofa. Of course, if you arrange everything correctly …

The interior design of a small kitchen

Initial data: A two-room apartment in a block house of the II-18 series has a kitchen with an area of 8 m². The matter is complicated by the elongated rectangular shape of the room (3,6 × 2,4 m), as well as the low level of the ceiling and window sill. Obviously, merry gatherings at a large table, beloved by the owners, are unlikely to be possible here. But…

Decision: The owners found a decent way out of the situation. They installed the refrigerator right next to the door, thus relieving the window area. In the same place, due to a narrow wall (40 cm), the old unit blocked access to the daylight room.

For the same reason – because of the narrow wall – the tabletop of standard depth (60 cm) was decided not to be laid along the entire wall. Instead, a narrow top-loading washing machine was placed in the corner.

The dining area was formed by a long (2 m) bench inscribed under the windowsill from the wall to the washing machine, a square transforming table and a pair of chairs.

When guests arrive, the table is laid out, chairs are added, and there are seven seats. This is how they managed to create a spacious, well-equipped and beautiful kitchen.

  1. The apron is faced with small (10 × 10 cm) Italian ceramic granite tiles in turquoise color. In Italy it is called a mosaic, in our country it is called a “hog”. To enhance the already contrasting solution, a terracotta-colored grout was used. The laminated tabletop, on the other hand, was made lighter (alder) to match the floor.
  2. A Paulmann rail lighting system (Germany) was used. Its distinctive features are high operating voltage (220 V) and the absence of a bulky transformer. Protection against electric shock is provided by a special rail design. Two copper conductors are hidden under the dielectric pads. The maximum total power of the luminaires is 1000 W.
  3. The walls of the kitchen are covered with decorative plaster. Usually it is applied with wide and rough strokes, but such a brutal texture is not suitable for a small room. Therefore, a notch was made on the surface with a fine-toothed spatula. That is, the wall seemed to be “combed” in the vertical direction. The finished white surface was covered with pink glaze, which is unevenly absorbed into the plaster. The result is a multi-tone color effect.

  1. The coloristic solution of the interior is built on contrast. Three colors prevail: pink (wall covering), beige (floor tiles and curtains), terracotta (table and kitchen sets). They are contrasted with a kitchen apron in a deep turquoise color, as well as lampshades, fabrics and accessories in different shades of blue.
  2. Wicker baskets for textiles and supplies fit under the bench. The layout of the underfloor heating system under the tiles does not reach the window by 50 cm, so the containers are not heated.
  3. The kitchen set was ordered in Belarus. Its undoubted advantages are the low price and natural material of the facades. They were made of solid oak and then tinted. The “filling” is quite modern. Doors and drawers can be opened with a light touch of the hand. The owners argued for some time which color of equipment and sink to choose, and in the end they settled on stainless steel. She looks dignified, and in stores it is presented quite widely, and “affordable”.
