Insulin is running low in pharmacies

More and more patients find it difficult to buy one of the most popular insulin analogues. Behind the deficit are unfair practices of pharmaceutical wholesalers.

The problem with the availability of insulin has been going on for two years, but recently the situation has become more acute. The rmf24.pl journalist, Mariusz Piekarski, investigated the reasons for this state of affairs.

As it turned out, the deficit in our country arises because a large batch of drugs does not reach us at all, but our western neighbors. It is mainly about Germany and the Czech Republic. Insulin, which costs about PLN 130 without reimbursement in Poland, reaches even four times the price there.

For this reason, manufacturers prefer to sell their drugs outside Poland. However, they cannot stop deliveries altogether, so they introduced limits that allowed pharmacies to purchase only a few packages of insulin at a time.

As you can imagine, the situation of diabetics is very uncomfortable because they have to compete with each other over who will get the drugs.

On Thursday, the Civic Platform (Platforma Obywatelska) submitted a bill which will make exports of specific drugs from Poland subject to severe penalties. Unfortunately, it is difficult to estimate whether it will be implemented and how long patients will have to wait for a possible improvement in the state of affairs.
